Anyone have any idea how to clean out the crumbs/particles that fall in the speaker grill on the studio xps 16? A vacuum does not seem to work.... its driving me insane. Great amazing laptop, but the speaker grills get very dirty and there seem to be no way to clean them.

Compressed air would do the trick. If that doesn't remove the chunkier particles, use a needle. That's the least of your concerns, wait until you get a stuck dust particle behind the plastic panel! I have one and it's driving me insane. I already wrote my Dell rep about it so they can send out a tech to clean it for me.

They told me they would send someone to clean out my second screen and they sent a screen replacement instead

How are they going to do that? AFAIK, the entire lid is one piece. I have a dirt particle already on my 2nd screen. The 1st one was so bad that I called them to swap it out, but I cannot do this every time.

That one cracked me up :D One would think that even big companies would try to cut costs and start saving in these difficult financial times, but i guess they can afford to throw replacement LCDs around.

I just used a hair dryer at full power and it pushed out most of the dust that was in the vents. The remaining stuff I picked out with a needle and it's clean as new now. I'm surprised that compressed air alone didn't do the job.

You should use the method brazilianguy used to clean out the dust. I just finished doing that tonight with a student id card. To get the dust out I covered the card with a screen cleaner wipe and wiped it off. I only removed the portion of the cover that was near the dust rather than the entire thing like brazilianguy did. Be weary that the cover is epoxied (at least it is on new SXPS 16 systems) so it will loosen. You will need to use a hair dryer or heat gun to get the glue to set again.

dont use a needle on the speaker grills, they are painted metal, the needle chips off the black paint. use a gummi-eraser, poster tack, or silly puddy, it grabs a lot of the dust out. and for the remainder i used a black sharpie to color ;)

my palmrest has gone through hell, first the speak grills filled up with dust like ice cube trays. the aluminum band has begun to pit and dissolve. and the black rubber contacts fell off and i had to glue them both back on.

i contacted dell about the rubber contacts, they said they were 'out of stock' and that id have to wait for them and that id be contacted, suffice it to say, months later they still never have. the superglue did the trick. the aluminum band is ugly sure, but mostly it really hurts my wrist when i type. hopefully the refurb replacement doesnt already have significant wear.

I had my xps 16 for 8 hrs and crap was getting in there already. I tried canned air, toothpick, and packing tape... nothing would get it out. I eventually took a sharpie to the white specs (makes it look like you dandruff all over your laptop disgusting) So i came up with the bright idea to take avery labes 5662 which are somewhat transparent and put the XPS logo with black background ~ google images xps logo and i used that. Covered them up. Looks sweet and don't worry about it now. I'm sure in the future i'll need some stronger stickers but for now it works greaty. Sry for the long reply. Hope this helps.

He used transparent labels, printed XPS logos he used from google onto them, and literally stuck them over the speaker grills.

It's not a bad idea, but I'm wondering how much that affects the sound quality (or lack of!) due to covering them with stickers.

the long speakers are purely cosmetic. There is only a small square near the top of the grill that is actually the speaker...

true, wouldn't it be cool to have white leds illuminating the speakers??

anyway, i had the m1530 which had a similar problem, a microfiber tissue worked like a charm, because dust literally sticks to it ( at least on mine, which has a lot of texture and is quite hairy )

my sxps 16 is new, but no doubt it will get filled with crud eventually ( be careful with some of the solutions that are posted, they could end up screwing up your speaker grills! )

hey guys, the grill on the 1645 isnt metal... it seems like its some kind of net... ? or am i wrong. so u cant scratch the black of, if that was ur concern?

if it was metal u woudl be able to easily clean it out. if it was metal sound quality would be bad. or am i wrong?

Has anyone yet tried chewing gum lol i read that somewhere....
