I was thinking about buy this laptop but have not been able to choose between resolutions.
I would be happy getting the 1900x1200 if I knew I could simply decrease it to 1440x900 if i wasnt happy. Now I have read here that you cant do that. It will cause the screen to go blurry. So I decided to confirm with dell support and they said you can do it. NOW I AM VERY CONFUSED......

    jack222
is there anywhere i can see comparision screen shots
    Agent Makrand_Karante
we do not have that option available.
    Customer jack222
hard for me to make the decision then
    Customer jack222
if i get 1920*1200, can i turn down resolution if i dont like it
    Agent Makrand_Karante
yes, you can definitely change the resolution.
    Customer jack222
    will that cause problems?
    Agent Makrand_Karante
    no, it would not.
    Agent Makrand_Karante
its just for the sake of convenience.
    Customer jack222
i have read that screen will go blurry if you change from its native resolution
    Customer jack222
    this not true?
    Agent Makrand_Karante
    no it would not.
    Agent Makrand_Karante
    we often change the resolutions.
    Agent Makrand_Karante
you would not have any problems when you change the resolutions.
    Customer jack222
if i do get the 1920*1200 and am not happy with it can i return for a lower res, because i know if i change the res it will cause problems
    Agent Makrand_Karante
when you select the 1920*1200, you can change the resolution up to the normal one which is 1280*800

u will lose picture quality on any monitor when u run it at a different (non-native) resolution.

I just tried switching from 1920x1200 to 1440x900 and 1280x800 and it did go blurry.

1920x1200 is not bad... I am using it (and I don't have a good eye either, wearing spec' since I was like 10).. I just increased the DPI and its been fine... And yes, as others mentioned, picture quality decreases once u go down from the native resolution. So if aren't happy with 1920x1200, either take a look at a friends laptop more and see if u have any issues or else chose the 1440x900.. cheers.

The screenshot with the reolution turned down did not look bad at all. If I decide on the 1530, hopefully the rep I talk to on the phone will let me upgrade the screen to the 1920 X 1200 screen even though there is no option for it on the EPP deal that is posted in the deals forum.

not sure if u have ordered yur system already, but u can't change anything on yur order once its "in production." u would have to cancel and reorder.

    @ jack222: anytime. ;)

I have not ordered anything yet. Still trying to decide what laptop I want to buy. I was really looking for something in the 15" range, so I was looking at the xps 1530 and the Asus G50v-A1, but then I saw my bestbuy has the gateway 6860 pretty cheap on clearance and if they woudl drop it even more, it would be hard to pass up on the gateway even though it is a 17" laptop(gotta love the 8800 GTS in it).

the gateway system would be a great bang for the buck. with the money saved, u can upgrade yur processor as it would be the bottle neck in that system. i just prefer the xps line. i really like the brushed aluminum. top notch fit & feel, and i've always been an avid dell customer.

Ya, I was looking at the gateway due to it being a good bang for the buck, the only problem is I don't think I would really need the 8800 GTS as I don't really do any computer gaming, I don't have time like I use to back when I was in college. And when I have time to game, I have my PS3. THe only games I can see myself playing in the future on a laptop would be diablo 3 and starcraft 2 and maybe the next call of duty and I am pretty sure the xps woudl be able to handle all of those games. I will most likely use the laptop for internet and stuff like that plus I will be using it as a mini htpc for HD tv, so I would have to get an external HD if I went the xps route as it only has 1 hard drive slot where as the gateway has 2.

I just got back from besbuy and the gateway just seems so big, I would rather get a 15" for better mobility, but I am just unsure at this point. I guess I just need to make a decision and go with it. I know that whatever I end up choosing I will like.

Houstoned, have you seen the 1440 X 900 LED screens on the XPS 1530's? if so, how would you compare it to the 1920 X 1200 screens. I think I would like the higher resolution when watching HD tv etc, although I would have my 1080p tv I could use for that when I am at home.

the LED is brighter and a little better color than other screens... not to mention lighter(key for laptops).....

u wont be gaming in 1920x1200.. only mulitasking like web browsing/document reading.....

i say go for the LED

How much of a difference would the 1920 x 1200 screen make for HDTV viewing.

i haven't seen the LED screen in person, so i couldn't really tell ya.

but i have compared my WUXGA screen to my 37" 720p LCD and my notebook is much more vivid and sharp. colors really jump at u compared to my LCD tv. LED screen might be brighter, but that'll only benefit u if u'r usin the laptop in an outdoor environment. most people with the LED screens have to actually turn their brightness down cuz its TOO bright. if u want picture quality then go with the WUXGA. u'll love the extra real estate on yur screen.

the weight issue, to me, is trivial. u cannot tell the difference between a few ounces, especially if u'r gonna be carryin yur notebook in a bag/backpack.
