It's a laptop I bought in 2009, it's older and out of warranty but I read somewhere about the GPU issues and either a extended or a lifetime warranty due to defects of the 8600m.

Basically I was on the laptop the screen just went black, the backlight is still on but nothing shows up.

The GPU is likely dead. I had two of these laptops, one with the 8400m gs and one with the 8600m gt.

The 8600m gt has died 3 different times with the same symptoms.

Try turning off the laptop, unplugging it from ac power, and remove the battery. Then reinsert the battery and turn it on. If you don't see the Dell Bios logo, then I would assume its a dead GPU.

Edit: I would also just like to say that Dell has been a POS on this issue.

I'll second that. You can also try to see if it works on an external display.

Thanks, I'm try this when I get home.

I can't get it to show up on my monitor, for some reason this also doesn't seem to work.

    So you lifetime warranty? lol

Guess due to the lack of responses, it's best to just get something else and move on.

Yup, you should not be trying to fix these GPU issues as it will just happen again.

anything I can sell besides the hard drive and memory or just dump the whole thing?

Some guy offered me $30 bucks for it.

I changed the panel to a 1920x1080 back in 2009

Since it's older tech, just trash it?

If you have really good specs, you could possibly get up to $200 parting it out... it's just a matter if it's worth your time to find the buyers and part/ship it out, etc.
