Hi, I have searched quite a bit and can't find an answer.

Is the 15'6 inch full hd wled screen the same good viewing angles I hear about on the 16'' RGB? or are they different?

This is really important to me because I have allready returned a handfull of laptops due to rubbish viewing angles and a washed out black on darker images/websites, really irritating me now! and the dell xps 16 seems to crop up as having the best screen, but I can't really afford the RGB screen, so was wondering if the wled is just as good viewing angle wise?

any help would be great :)

I have sxps with wled 1080p screen. The horizontal viewing angles are good, no complaints. it starts to lose contrast at about 150 degrees or so. Vertical angles are normal for laptop display, good from bottom and bad from top.
It's not like a desktop IPS or VA panel but compared to TN panels it's clearly one of the better even for dell (they have very bad screens on inspirons, the wled sxps ones are MUCH better).

The viewing angles are the same on both wled and RGB, just the colors are richer and deeper on RGB.

To be more specific, from what I have seen with my Studio XPS 1640, there are two manufacturers for the 15.6" WLED 1080p display: LG and AU Optronics. I originally had the LG, but needed to have the frame replaced as there were some cosmetic defects. I received an AUO panel, and to be honest I have yet to see any issues with it. The LG and the AUO looked very similar. I would try to have Dell replace this panel over and over until I get the LG panel back again because, well, LG just "seems" like a better brand to go with, but again I am content with the AUO display.

    Thanks :)

So it looks like the wled will be fine then! i'm not much fussed about the colors from the rgb screen, just the viewing angles!

How do I know if I get a LG or AUO? why do they use two different makes? they are not offering the 720p atm so i'll be getting a full hd one, fingers crossed it's decent :)

When you receive your system check the monitor device id and it will tell you if it is LG or AUO. I guess no way of knowing until you actually receive it. Good luck with your new computer! :)

Well I received my new system today and it's an AUO panel, my old system that I'm getting replaced is LG. I guess they started using AUO in new XPS systems. So I compared them next to each other, same resolution and size and you could barely see a difference. However for those people that are as picky as me there were 2 things that I noticed. The viewing angles are better on LG, the picture might not show that but if you look at the clouds towards the left on AUO, it disappeared sooner vs LG that is still visible at that particular angle.

The other thing that I prefer is that AUO is brighter and its good in the long run and LG is slightly darker. For some reason you can not see it on photos but in person LG has slightly deeper colors but it could be due to having a darker display. In person the clouds/sky on LG look like a dim day and on the AUO the clouds look like a sunny day. Honestly, it is really minor and hard to even notice until look more closely.

Congrats on the replacement unit. I see that they also got you the Alpine White w/Leather, same that happened to me. It's going to be interesting keeping the leather part "white", haha. I find it does help in carrying it, though, and I figure the white plastic will make it harder to see fingerprints, although I am regularly wiping the palmrest :(

Thank you. No I'm actually replacing the white one, cause I was supposed to have a black one originally. I had a white MacBook before and wanted something different for a change. But it is defintely harder to see fingerprints on white.

Thanks Dr Nat :) you can slightly see the brightness increase yeah, and the slightest viewing angle difference on the top picture :)

The trouble I have with recent laptops is when viewing black/dark websites, or backgrounds, it just seems to go to crap, but light images look fantastic, my mate said i'm seeing things but I swear i'm not!

I just checked the panel on this laptop I have now, and it's a 17'' AUO, pretty decent aswell compared to the newer ones i've had.

Ah, I see. Yeah, I wish that they carried their paint jobs to the palmrest... /wipes his palm prints off his palmrest again...

I wonder if I could ask for the Merlot Red one... without leather. I think it would look nice... hah.

Well, its not just you :) I guess its a trade off for having bright wled but when viewing it especially when lights are turned off, the blacks don't look as good and are kinda gray. Congrats on your new notebook :)

Yeah I can't stop wiping my prints too :) I'm actually considering getting Invisible Shield, i heard it does a good job for the palm rest and leaves less residue. It would be even better for you since you have a leather accent and they are designed for that particular model. Unfortunately, I have a glossy finish and they have not yet produced one.
And merlot Red should look nice too :)
