I was really looking forward getting my new XPS M1330.
Unfortunately, it does not work anymore.

I used the Reformat Guide and am used to formatting pc systems, but I think it is either the memory or the motherboard which is broken , or even both.

So I am in this situation where I can get an exchange laptop or a dell guy coming by to fix this. I settled for a replacement.

Do you think I can expect any form of compensation when I call Dell Customer Care? I mean I bought this brand new item, and it is not even working on its first day. crazy right? so what do you think, would calling dell and asking for some sort of compensation be a good idea.

I know I will try anyway no matter what you say, but it is always good to hear many opinions.

    Cheers

Just make sure they don't sent you a refurbished notebook for replacement. If they do, just return both and give it another shot with a different order.

In all honestly, if a computer that I bought was defective on day one....I'd return it and not settle for anything else.

    hi greg,

and that is what i did.

but i have once heard of some kind of price protection.
by the time i get the replacement, which is made new ( at least thats what i have been told), prices will have dropped slightly.

thats why i was asking if i should ask dell about a compensation.

If the price does indeed drop, then you just need to call it once it drops. There is no need to 'demand' a price adjustment now...because you cannot prove prices will fall in the short term.

Wait...did you completely return the notebook so that you'd have to order again? Or did Dell promise to send you a replacement and then you ship the old notebook back? I'm confused as to what your 2nd post meant on that matter.

I don't know why you would get compensation for anything. The dell warranty offers a replacement product of equal or better specs. It doesn't say if your notebook breaks, we will pay you $500 as well as replace your computer. there would be no sense in that

Yes I will get a new laptop and return my old notebook, but I did not order a new one, they will send me the laptop with the same specifications.

Gotcha...again, make sure it isn't refurb.

You have 21 days from date of invoice to decide to return. The 21 days does NOT refresh with a replacement computer...so if there is ANYTHING wrong with the new one, or the order is delayed to the point you won't get it until after 21 days, just return the whole thing.

If you read the warranty it will be replaced with a new OR refurb equivalent. Best thing is to return it for a refund then re-order if you really want to get a new one.

Yeah, but sometimes when the notebook is less than 21 days old they send out a new one.

In all fairness, I've never seen Dell ship out a new one...always refurb in the 21 day period. Basically a big ripoff.

Return it if you even *think* something is wrong.

There is a green sticker on the bottom saying it is refurbished. Though my S15 I bought was a refurb from the Outlet, but no sticker. I am guessing it was a new order and was either canceled or returned.

well if it is going to be a refurbished laptop, then i will send it back.

in honesty, i paid a lot for this laptop, why should i settle for a refurbished, when paying for a brand new system.

i mean, its not my fault that the first one was broken.
if they are not getting me a new one, there is no need for a replacement.

then it would be better to just return it and order a new one.

    Thanks for the info.

While I think that sometimes refurb is really no big deal, I totally agree that you shouldn't have to accept a used product for any reason when the original 'agreement' was that you were purchasing a new system. If they want to get rid of some inventory, they should ask you first if it is ok, and offer a discount. Then it could actually be a cool thing, instead of a betrayal and rip off.

    My sticker is red.

I lol'd at financial compensation for the order. I seriously doubt Dell would do that. To make an extremely long story short, I have been through a tremendous amount of **** just trying to get Dell to give me an "equal or better" replacement for the notebook in my sig and even the one they have arranged to give me now doesn't fulfill that criteria. I still have to call them and argue with them just to get them to honor their warranty, much less get some sort of compensation for all the trouble I've gone through

I think it would be easier instead of an exchange to do a return and repurchase. I know they wanted to set up an exchange for my Studio but it would have taken two weeks.

On another note, you should have been able to demand an advanced exchange also, wherein they send you a new unit right away and you just box up and ship your old one back as soon as you have had a chance to check out the new one.

There is no reason I can think of why this is not a reasonable thing to do as it cuts the total turnaround time for you in half, and still guarantees Dell that they will get the bad unit back. I mean seriously, I had to argue with them about this once, and as a brand new customer, I was insulted to think that they would expect me, under any circumstance, to wait a month turnaround time to get a satisfactory machine. The company is great at making it easy to purchase a computer, and I think they are typically great at delivering it. But man, if the thing is not perfect from the start and you need to do something about it, then it can just turn in to a super pain in the butt.

Now that they sell through places like Bestbuy, they seriously should just come up with a way of just letting you return it there and order again or something.

well he technician on the phone told me it will take up to 5-8 business days starting today.
i will keep the old one as long as the new one hasn't arrived, then there's some sort of special box to return it.

i thought exchanging my system for a brand new one was a good idea, but now that i hear that they are refurbished, i'm not sure...

i asked him about that when requesting a replacement, and he told me it will be new, but well he could have lied.

You shouldn't have to worry. They do not usually send out a refurb unless you have owned your machine for more than a month or so. I think a lot hinges on that initial 21 day period - new for new. After that, don't think they are going to trade brand new for used. As annoying as that is.
