I found out after coming back from saving my buddy a ton of money on his new car that the difference was taken out on my laptop. My friends were trying to move a futon while our house is being remodeled and the thing accidentally collapsed, barely smacking into my laptop that has laying on the arm of a couch (it's a pillow couch). Now, the bottom right is creased and colored lines are running vertically near the middle of the screen. Here's a picture.

Should I go through Dell's Out Of Service Warranty, or should I buy a new LCD display? Is that all there is to it, or is there something even more serious with my computer? I just don't know if I want to send it in to the depot and wait a week or two for it to come back, especially this close to school. Any help would be appreciated.

Well, it was definitely an accident (with a one in a million chance), and they promised to pay me back for the price of it. I just wanted to find which alternative would be more affordable, since I don't want them to pay too much. They're both real nice guys. ;)

well if your programs are running fine, then the display should be the only problem. (did you check under the laptop to make sure pressure didnt crack the bottom? fan area?) id try to get a quote or estimate from dell, and maybe go see online what u can get. maybe ebay? just thought id throw my 2 cents in.

Don't you have Dell's accidental damage warranty? It's quite useful as you see. ;)

Though could try buyng a new LCD if you can find one, or bring the laptop to Dell and ask what would they charge for switching it out.

A new LCD should be 250-300$, add the lid (50-100) plus labor...it`s close to 500$ ...

i would recommend getting dell to do the repairs, it may cost some more, because if you dont have experience on disasembly, then it could be possible that your computer wont fit together nicely anymore when you re assemble it.

i feel your pain, the first laptop my bro and i had burned due to voltage variations on the outlet, and the second one got stolen, so things happen :D

( he is now on his third and im on my first, lets see who's bursts into flames first )

Well, it seems that the only damage is the screen. Looking around the lid, there's a small ding, but nothing else (this laptop is a tank). Would that make the cost a lot less?

You should see how much it would cost going either way, then decide from there.

not unless you were planning on repairing ALL damage done. as far as the screen goes, i personally would go with DELL knowing that the part will fit correctly and if you choose to send it in, they are doing what they are paid to do. IF you know how to install a new screen than more power to you, you could probably get one off ebay or something. :)

    all up to you.
