EDIT: YES IT WORKS, YOU CAN CLOSE THIS

So I can't find a straight answer on this, help me out.
I have an m1530 from 2008, I upgraded to windows 7 64-bit and I wanted to get 8GB of RAM. Some sources claim 4GB is the max, others say 8GB.

    I have BIOS A12

I used SIW (System Information for Windows) and it said 4GB was the max.

I'd really like to get 8GB for some hardcore multitasking/running virtual machines, but I don't want to waste my money.

So can anyone give me a definitive answer? And are there hardware differences in the various components of the motherboard that would affect this (i.e. I've heard new laptops have 8GB options, but I don't know what has changed internally).

Oh, one more thing, what is the max speed of the RAM? I can see it has PC-5300 installed, but crucial claims it can also use PC-6400

    Thanks!

    edit:
this link says 8GB works, so many others claim 4GB is the max

you can use 8 gigs of ram with 64 bit. pc 6400 will work but it will read and clock as pc 5300

M1530 uses a PM965 chipset, so fastest RAM support is PC2-5300. You should be able to go to 8 GB RAM.

I bet it's more like Inspiron 1x20 series where the chipset officially supports 8GB, but where due to whatever implementation limitation on Dell's part, the laptop won't do the full 8. It's never not worth a shot, though.

Thanks. Seems like it's confirmed. One other thing, if I get pc-6400 ram with cl6, would it possibly be cl5 running at pc5300? I'm trying to use an amazon gift card.
