and I just received an XPS which I had planned to return anyway, (screen problem and doesn't sit flat on a desk - tippy) ...

so what to buy instead? The Latitude is their 'best' build quality ... what's next the 'Vostro' line then Inspiron, then Studio ?

Just because they're discontinuing it doesn't mean you shouldn't get one. Just think, you'll have a laptop that's extinct.

Apparently they're gonna be making the xps line just a sub-line of laptops. So the higher end configurations of the inspiron and studio lines will be inspiron xps and studio xps. You could always wait until they do that. No word on when it will happen though, or if it even will happen.

Im very happy with this xps m1330, Is one of the most powerful laptops I ever saw/used. Ill keep it even if they discontinue the xps line. Also I guess that its the best line of Dell.

I hope they don't make it all plasticky.

The XPS stood out because of its slim form, sleek look, and power. The least they can do is to retain the aluminum body!

I agree, I love the brushed aluminum on my palmrests. Just beautiful! Especially after the Vista and Nvidia stickers are taken off... gives the whole thing a very uniform look.

I'm sad to see the XPS line go, especially the m1330... they were giving the Macbook and Sony SZ (now SR and Z) a run for their money at a much more affordable price (er... no pun intended). Hope the new "XPS" sub-series keeps the quality up.

With no dedicated graphics (at least in the configuration previewed on this site), the 13" Inspiron is no replacement for the m1330. And there's no other 13" laptop in the market that can deliver gaming performance (except the LG P300 which is a pain to get hold of).

Actually, Sony's 13" laptops all have dedicated graphics.

I was going to get the Sony SR, but that one didn't come with the HDMI. Got the 1330 with Nvidia.

How long will they continue to support the XPS line though?

Probably is the vents size. Don't have that big air inlets and fans.

    Hmmmm... :(

I hope they keep retain some of the good *attributes* of the XPS line, and add some even better ones...for the future. ;) :)

    Focus forward, I guess! ;) :D

    - smaller chassis + discrete GPU = less area for heat dissipation.
    - cooling setup isn't very efficient (check copper mod)

The heating problem combined with the *Nvidia chip problem is probably the reason for discontinuing the entire line.

*alleged Nvidia chip problem but it's likely because other laptops are said to have similar problems when they have the discrete Nvidia graphics

Dell knows that the quality/style/performance of the XPS models were the main reasons they sold so well, so I'm sure the Studio XPS models will retain those elements including the aluminum (or magnesium alloy) body. In other words, whatever you got with the current XPS models, you should get with the new models and better.

Of course it depends a lot on the Taiwanese company selected by Dell to manufacture these new models.

The sole reason is because they use a thermal pad on the GPU rather than a properly mating copper heatsink design.

Well I hope they take out a new Studio with backlit, aluminum and better graphics... I like the XPS line but I don't buy it right now because I want new technology. I'm not a big gamer, but I want to be able to run Flight Simulator X very smooth. Also I'm photographer so... I need a good laptop to edit pictures...
