Hello, I really need some help or advice before I order any parts. One morning I started my laptop and it won‘t turn on. It powers on, num light is on, power light is on, hard drive activity was on for several seconds and then turned off, but still could hear hard drive spinning, but the screen is completely dead, it did not start at all and as I can hear windows won't load as well. I tried holding D+power so the screen showed me some images, so
I know my led is working, then I tried FN+power, I got that caps lock flashing at the beginning and then beeping sound playing with ligths, exactly like on this other model dell laptop on youtube, but screen would stay black all the times. Start playing it from 50s
    YouTube - ‪Dell Studio 1737 Startup Failure (Fn + Power Button)‬‏

It's just weird when your computer crashes like that, when you turn it off nicely at the evening and can't start in the morning. Dell told me it's motherboard, but this video refers me to my nvidia sli graphics card, tried to play with ram moving around, but still nothing. What do u guys think? Could it really be video card? is there any way to check so i'm confident to buy a new one ? Thanks alot.

Do you get external display on a monitor?

Which GPU does your M1730 have? It was listed on the defective Nvidia GPU page..

I think the OP is saying his display is fine/working. Does it POST and show the BIOS or anything??? Keep this in mind too-I just bought a Mobo that I do not need bc my warranty will take care of any issues I have. So before you buy one, lemme know. I'll sell cheap.

I haven't tried external monitor, but do u think it's gonna turn on if I don't even see bios and it doesn't load up windows? my screen is always black, don't even twinkle or anything once I power on the machine. But i will try once i get a cable. It's nvidia 8700m gt sli 512mb together. That's the one many of u baking in the oven ? lol .. I will let u know PMASSEY31545 if I need a mobo, thanks. Better mobo than video card :)

Piping it out to an external display will rule out a bad LCD vs mobo/GPU/RAM. If it displays externally fine and no display on the LCD, then you got a bad LCD/inverter. Vice versa if you get no video on LCD or external then you have a bad motherboard/GPU.

From what I am gathering the 8700M GT is based off the G84M core which unfortunately is badly affected by the defective Nvidia chips. I know the M1730 has removable modules, but still could be a bad GPU.

That's what im thinking too, that either mobo or gpu, but is there any way to check it out without trying a new one ? I just don't want to buy a new gpu and then find out that the issue is somewhere else.

yeah...I ruled out the problem. It was my graphics card, but instead of buying a new one I tried to fry it in the oven and guess what, it's working. Only interesting for how long LOL . I just kept it in the oven under 180C for 10 minutes. Cheap and quick fix. But now my speakers do not play, probably I forgot to connect the cable to the motherboard or something, got to disassemble again, though there is sound coming to the headphones.

Well glad to hear you got some sort of temporary fix. The GPU baking results are really unstable, some last as long as 2+ years, some just a few days before more artifacts/loss of video. Unless you go to the 9800M GTX, I would really look into getting a new laptop..
