Hi, I am completely new to this, so bear with me.
My dearest daughter thought it would be funny to spill some water over my XPS laptop (M1710) this morning, now the laptop will not even boot up.
At the time, the laptop was not on, I have taken the laptop apart, tried to dry any water I could see (not that there was much) put the laptop back together but still no joy. Having read some threads on the site, I have tried the FN and Media keys, I get all three lights come on and they the flash every now and again but no boot up.
I have a funny feeling that either the power supply or motherboard have gone but before I spend my time with Dell support, can anyone offer any assistance or advice...???

I'd take it apart completely and let it air dry for a couple of hours or even over night. But if any water hit the motherboard while it was powered on it most definitely has shorted out and is probably toast.

Could be still some moisture in the components. Either let it air dry or blow dry it and try again. If you had accidental coverage you could send it back to Dell.

I actually see this quite a lot in my work. Did you remove the GPU and CPU as well when you took the laptop apart? If not most likely this is where your water was hiding. Did you remove the Wireless card? How about the ram? If it wasn't fully dry powering it up will most likely damage it when water is still in there. I would NOT power it up again until you completely disassemble it and thoroughly dry all components. If you are unsure of yourself with a hairdryer on your laptop components then some compressed air should suffice. I would leave it COMPLETELY disassembled for 24 hrs to make sure all parts are dry before you reassemble it to power it up again. Good luck and hopefully you didn't fry it by powering it up before all components were completely dry. I have powered up laptops that have been completely submerged overnight in water after I have completely dried them out. The only other thing you have to worry about is if you have a lot of minerals in your water that will remain after the water evaporates. This is where an eraser (regular pencil eraser) comes in handy. Keep us posted and good luck.
