Hi I just got my XPS m1530 (great machine btw) but i noticed it runs a bit hot...

I used the i8kfan GUI program with my old Inspiron 9400 with no problems at all.

However, this little great piece of software doesn't work with full fan control on the m1530.

The temperatures and everything show up but I'd really like the fans to run at high when I play games.

Anyone know any other way to have control over the fans?

    Thanks in advance

Have you considered an external fan?

I have one of those targus chill mats and it's quite small and very light. It's only slightly thicker than the LCD panel of the m1530.

I just got a targus mat a couple of days ago and im not impressed. aevareth if you are looking to cool down your cpu temp specifically, dont bother with the mat it wont help. It does make the outside case a bit cooler to the touch but no recognizable difference to the internal components. Ill probably return mine

Have you searched for any other programs that can change the fan settings?

    I8kfan should work.

I use it on all my systems. You have to tweak it a bit though. Like changing GPU sensor numbers to read correct temps etc.

Change GPU sensor #'s until it matches ATItool temps.

I use I8k (if you guys read my post) but the fan control option doesn't seem to be working on this notebook. (is it just me?)

Just wondering if there are any tweaks needed for this or something to make it work

My guess is you prolly don't know how to work it. Just play around w/ it a bit.

I can force/control on all my systems, but I only use them to monitor temps, not control them.

hmm yeah ive been playing around with it.

It worked fine on my Inspiron 9400...

Just doesn't work on the xps m1530.

Is there anyone out there that can test the program on the m1530 for me?

    Thanks

as of yet there seems to be no program out there for this.

We will have to just wait and see if someone can crack the bios and create a program that allows for manual fan control.

So, that means someone cracked the Inspiron BIOS since there are programs to manually control the fan?
    - I have yet to see any hacked BIOS downloads for the DELL Inspiron

    sorry I must clarify.

When I said crack (instead of hack) my intention was to show that someone decompiled the bios and went through the settings for the ACPI fan control and created a program that would override the bios fan control once booted into windows.

As in most previous computers where you had manual fan control, it was still the bios that originally regulated the fan. Programs like i8kfangui can override the bios they were designed for.

With the new bios, dell has locked out the fan settings and so programs like speedfan and i8k can not override them (seems speedstep is also locked out).

So now someone needs to go through the new bios again and figure out how to override the bios control of the fan.

=(. The program doesn't work with my XPS 1530 either. Bummer, the computer gets really hot when playing Call of Duty 4 too, like 80 for the CPU. That can't be good

I too would love to control my fan.

I am starting to think there is something a little wrong with mine. It ramps up really hard for a couple of seconds and then backs off. It sounds like the fan controller is not working quite right. In all other machines I use the fan slowly ramps up to the speed it needs....not blasts your ears and then immediately backs off to a slower speed.

I have heard it work properly once, and it was a lot less intrusive in terms of noise. For some reason it has never done it again, and I have no idea what I did to make it work right :(

So Achilles you can control all 3 fans on the M1730? Well I have tried that with I8kFanGui and it only controls 2 fans, not the middle GPU fan. So how did you setup I8kFanGui to control that middle GPU fan?
