Greets, I am in the process of ordering a Dell XPS 1730, I was wondering:

    - can one upgrade the 8700GT SLI cards to 8800 when this comes out?
    - anyone updated on any release date of the 8800?
    - can one upgrade to the Extreme CPU later, when this perhaps drops in price?

    1. dell cannot have there GPu upgraded they do not use MXM
    2. Sometime in mid November
    3. Yes you can upgrade the extreme Cpu later. But I do not think the price will drop that much.

Just to clarify on #1. Dell can upgrade their video cards even if they do not use MXM. Dell uses its own proprietary format; however, this has not stopped upgrades in the past. The drawback of Dell not using MXM for consumers is that the video card would have to come from Dell. Whether or not a video card can be upgraded depends on Dell, and less so on the lack of use of MXM format.

Almost all DELL notebooks released within last couple of years with dedicated graphics adaptors can be upgraded using newer DELL graphics cards released for the same notebook model. Even though they don’t use the standard MXM, I think they use their own custom version of it (or at least the idea).

IF DELL decide to release a SLI capable 8800 model for the M1730 then yes (most probably).
    Have no idea
Again yes (most probably), but remember both GPU and CPU upgrades will void your warranty.

Thanks alot for your feedback, good to know about the possibilities to upgrade. Might be necessary later on. Do you know if one can send the laptop back to Dell for the GPU and CPU upgrades to keep the warranty intact? I am getting a 3 year extended warranty as well as accident insurance.

I have also read somewhere that the warranty will not be voided if one does follow the service manual when upgrading, can anyone confirm this?

    EDIT:
one more question, I might get a 30% discount on the extreme GPU through a deal we have, is it worth the money -bang for bucks so to speak?

How about you not telling people that they might upgrade their video cards? Maybe Dell will not do that. Don't give people false hopes.
It's more likely that Dell will not upgrade any of your cards to 8800Ms, so don't get your hopes up too high.

Because they will upgrade the model to 8800M cards, but they will not upgrade laptops bought without them. It's a simple concept actually. It forces people to buy another laptop.

Nobody that knows for sure whether the upgrade program will or will not offer upgrades to current XPS 1730 owners?

Would seem a bit strange if Dell would not offer upgrades to current owners, seeing that they did launch their new 'beast' not long before nVidia gets the chance to release their newest GPU.
Also considering that Alienware are planning to launch a laptop with 8800 in November, people who got a 1730 in these days would not be happy to buy a new laptop allready.

Think I read in the 1730 owners thread something about someone that got a deal for upgrading their GPU when it gets launched, will ask there if someone can comment on this.

Long story short, if in the future they offer a 1730 with better graphics card options you can upgrade by buying the card from dell.

I don't know what the previous comments are about not being able to upgrade the M1730.

Its been accepted by nearly all of the forum elsewhere that I'll be possible because DELL THEMSELVES HAVE COMMITTED TO UPGRADING! And its true that Dell use their own pseudo-MXM-III interface... but its been shown that they're only using 140 outta 150 watts... because they can UPGRADE!

I honestly don't care since I haven't bought this machine (which I also like by the way), but it will all come down to the D-Day.

Nobody said it can't be updated, but you'll have to find one to update to.

fade to black your an idiot, go on you-tube search m1730 there are multiple interviews showing dell execs saying that they arre making sure that there is a full upgrade path for owners for future graphics cards. YOU WILL BE ABLE TO CALL IN TO DELL AND PAY FOR SOMEONE TO COME AND UPGRADE THE CARD. That is what they promised, If they do not do that, then it is false advertising and im sure you can convince them to let you return your m1730 no matter how long you have owned it to purchase the newer model.
