I may be wrong so correct me if I am. The XPS 1710 was annouced back in 2006. Dell then redesigned the exterior to the current XPS 1730 back in 2007. I would not be surprised to see Dell do another exterior design change of the current 17" XPS laptop to bring it in line with its current Dell XPS desktops i.e. brushed metal exterior like the previous XPS 1710.

Also considering that Dell seems to be using the 16x9 format with its current studio XPS laptops I wouldn't be surprised either if Dell goes for 18.4" screen on a redesigned XPS1730. The laptop wouldn't be as deep as the 17" but would be longer in terms of width. Any how this is just speculation but it seems to me that we should expect a design change from Dell some time this year.... and hopefully soon :)

It probably isn't going to happen. Dell has tossed their M17xx line of XPS since they bought Alienware. They would rather you buy an Alienware M17 or M17x, they even advertise these laptops on their site.
