    Hi,

I am looking at getting a XPS 17 but having a hard time deciding (actually configuring) one on Dell's web site. I want the cheapest xps 17 that will give me an I7 processor, 4 memory slots and 2 hdd bays. I really don't care about the rest. I will upgrade the memory and the hard drive(s) myself.

This seems to be hard to determine what is what on the website. After chatting with a Dell rep, I am not convinced he new what he was talking about.

Are the two current units still the L701x/L702x? Based upon the service/user manuals for those, either model should come with 4 memory slots. But from what I saw on the forums, that's not necessarily true. I wish the tech. geeks could get more info on the hardware that they are suppose to lay down good money for. This is why I have been building desktops for over 20 years. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Some of this may be true.......

The L702X replaced the L701X, which is no longer available new from Dell. Main difference is that the the L702X included the Sandy Bridge chipset and upgraded video card offerings.

All L702X have two drive bays. AFAIK, they all come with both drive caddies as well, even if you only order one drive at time of purchase.

The only way to get four DIMM slots is to order the 3D version and 3Gb video card. All other configurations have two slots.

AFAIK, the only available CPU is the i7.

There are i5 variants but as you say the only way to get 4 dimm slots is to configure a 3d version with 3d screen and 3d gpu. But please note all 555m's can still output to a 3d tv in 3d regardless of what version you choose.
