Dell XPS 1647's CPU temperature reached 82C, is it too high?

That was after playing 25 minutes of Starcraft 2 Beta. I know SC2 is more CPU intensive so it's understandable that the CPU gets pretty hot, but is 82C too hot? That's the hottest I've seen it. My GPU was only 73C.

If it matters, the CPU is an i5-430M and I'm also using the Logitech N100 cooling pad (which doesn't really seem to help since the fan is just blowing at the metal cover rather than into the vents).

Would updating my BIOS make it run cooler? I just got the laptop about a week ago and I'm not entirely sure how to go about updating the BIOS. If someone can link me to a guide, that would be greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't worry about CPU temperature unless the laptop is uncomfortable to your hands/body. The CPU likely could run at 90C (or even 100C) for years and still manage to outlast the GPU, screen and overall build quality. I would guess 82C is a normal temperature during heavy use, although I don't have that processor.

The temperature of the CPU should not affect its performance unless it hits a VERY high temperature (I think the desktop version is 111C). So unless you live in an oven, this should not be a problem :). The GPU is another story. When/if it hits 84C, it throttles, and you will notice a major decrease in frames per second if it happens (Ctrl+Alt+F shows fps in Starcraft II beta). When it cools off a bit, it goes back to normal performance, creating a nasty cycle.

If you got the laptop a week ago from Dell it probably has the latest BIOS (A08). You can check your version in the Dell Support Center (pre-installed by Dell software) or I think it even says the version when you boot up the computer. You can get the latest Drivers/BIOS from support.dell.com if you don't have version A08. It's the same procedure as installing a driver.

My bad. I just thought it was the same as the XPS 1645 since the laptops are nearly identical.

Oh, I got the laptop from my local Best Buy. I checked the BIOS version and it's A01.

So to install the new version, I just download and run it? What about the flashing and stuff? I've never updated my BIOS before so I have no idea how to flash my BIOS, if that's necessary.

Times change, this time for the better. No longer do you need to make a floppy to flash the bios... just download the .exe and run it. -Good luck!

82 C is fine, but i personally think its getting on the hot side. But since the I cpus came out, i really can't think of anything to remedy that (previous solution was UV)

    and he's using 1647, latest A06 bios.

Wth 82C is very hot isn't it?
My i7 720QM is 56C idle but even this won't rise to 82C when gaming.
Very hot. Especially since you only used it for 25mins and it's only i5.
    Post screens please.

According to Intel, the maximum Junction Temperature for a Core i5-430M is 105C.

Intel® Core? i5-430M Processor (3M Cache, 2.26 GHz) with SPEC Code(s) SLBPM, SLBPN

It is designed to run at full speed right up to that temperature and then will start to throttle and slow down after that. The thermal shutdown temperature is usually 25C after that so somewhere up in the 125C to 130C range. The actual temperature varies slightly from one CPU to the next. Intel would not set their temperature limits so high if your CPU was going to explode and cause a pile of RMA claims. They set their limits high because these CPUs are quite capable of running 100% reliably at temperatures that seem extreme to most people.

If you want ThrottleStop to report your CPU core temperature instead of the DTS column just enter TJMax=105 into the ThrottleStop.ini configuration file for an i5-430M.

is this real? cuz i have i540m 2.53 with turbo boost to 3.06gz.
the highest temp ive seen is 78c while playing war of worldcraft. generally it settle within 71-75 with no external cooling at all.

Does the OP use a 6-cell battery by chance? I see about a 5 degree difference with the back of my unit elevated.

Here's what page 77 of the datasheet has to say.

    Intel® Core™ i7-600, i5-500, i5-400 and i3-300
Mobile Processor Series Datasheet — Volume One

    http://download.intel.com/design/processor/datashts/322812.pdf

Thermal Trip: The processor protects itself from catastrophic overheating by use of an internal thermal sensor. This sensor is set well above the normal operating temperature to ensure that there are no false trips. The processor will stop all execution when the junction temperature exceeds approximately 130°C. This is signaled to the system by the THERMTRIP# pin.

I'm pretty sure if the CPU ever got that hot the laptop would already be infused with the desk or his lap.

My laptop (not a dell 1647 or a dell) with i7-720QM, the cores get to 91-96C on a hot day. On a not so hot day, around 85-88C.

This is while playing Borderlands 1366x766 High settings, with a notebook GT 240M.

So I am thinking of getting a 1647 with HD 5730 and i5-520M. Is there anybody who would advise me against this?

Again this may vary with environment. Here the room temp or external temp is in the upper-mid to high 20Cs.

Hey, i have 5730 and i5 520 laptop (its asus)

    Its maximum temperatures:

Borderlands max settings 1600x900, the temps are (after couple of hours)

    max CPU 77°C
    max GPU 73°C

using laptop cooler, room temperature round low 25°C.

I use RealTemp (accurate more or less) and HwMonitor.
