Try this. It is meant for global shortcuts for a keyboard, but getting it to work with global hotkeys is the key to getting it to work with special media buttons or remote control for that matter. It might work..

    Get a bluetooth phone :p

    I don't use my remote at all - I swapped it out for a 32Gb SSD :]

It depends on the player. Usually you can configure it in the player's hotkey section (not all players support this).
    For VLC :
Go to Tools > Preferences > Hotkeys; click on the action you want to assign to the remote control key, then click on the text box between clear and set buttons, it will popup a small dialog asking Press the new keys for xxxx, then press the desired button on the remote controller. Save and exit VLC. That’s it.
