I was wondering if there was anyway to enable the remote that came with my Dell XPS m1530 to work with itunes while it is not the focused window. thanks for any help

Yep. Use the search button ... itunes mediaplay or something like that

Try this. It is meant for global shortcuts for a keyboard, but getting it to work with global hotkeys is the key to getting it to work with special media buttons or remote control for that matter. It might work..

thank you i got t fixed using the mmkeys.dll

How would one get the remote to work with vlc or other types of media players?
-
Get a bluetooth phone
I don't use my remote at all - I swapped it out for a 32Gb SSD :] -
For VLC :
Go to Tools > Preferences > Hotkeys; click on the action you want to assign to the remote control key, then click on the text box between clear and set buttons, it will popup a small dialog asking Press the new keys for xxxx, then press the desired button on the remote controller. Save and exit VLC. That’s it.
