    Hi
    I have bought a Dell XPS 15 (l501x) laptop 1.5 years ago,
some months ago I have experiencing shutdowns and I cleaned up my laptop fan and heatsink and my problem goes away.
but now i have same problem, my laptop shutdowns very quickly, even on diagnostics! my cpu temperature quickly goes to 100 centigerad and shuts down.
my gpu temperature is fine (about 60 degree), my fan seems working properly. i replaced cpu and gpu thermal pastes but is see no difference. i tested another heatsink on my laptop too but my problem still remains.

something that is strange for me is difference of temperature between top of cpu and 5-10cm of near it.
temperature of my heatsink on top of cpu goes to 90 degree but near of it in 5-10cm distance is about 50 degree.

    any idea?

    thanks

it kindof sounds like the heatsink isn't touching your CPU very well. did you make sure to screw the heatsink onto the cpu tightly and make sure that the screws/screw posts aren't broken or chipped? my very old m1530 had a problem with one screw post, so a part of the heatsink wasn't touching it, causing it to overheat.

I checked it when I installing heatsink on it, my heatsink temperature is hot as my cpu, both of them experiencing overheating, but only part of heatsink that covers cpu experiences high temperatures, near gpu and fan my heatsink temperature is about 50 degree.

If you've repasted and cleaned it thoroughly and it is still overheating, likely you'll need to replace the heatsink.

I have tested with another xps laptop heatsink (it's used heatsink) , but i saw same behavior, on top of cpu temperature of heatsink is very high but at other places such as on top of gpu or near fan or 5-10 cm distance over cpu degree was about 50.

it seems my heatsink and the other too are unable to carry heat to near fan.
my fan works properly when i test but when i touch laptop i sense that my fan not working very well.

is new heatsink can help me? or i replace fan too?

can overheat is because of cpu damage?
