I've been having this problem recently, although I just got the laptop a couple weeks ago.

I tried playing Turning Point, but before I can get far, it shuts off. It did that twice in a row, and it happened to another game I tried playing. What is up? Is there something wrong with the temps?

Yeah, I have 174.31 on mine, the latest driver.

EDIT: Oh boy, new problems: first off, when I hit the Power Button, which I set to go to Hibernation when I click it, instead just flashes to black and goes to the Log On screen without turning off. Then, the display changes over to 1280x720. This has been acting up since I reinstalled Windows. It's really frustrating when I am trying to conserve energy without completely shutting off my laptop. Any solutions for this? Thanks!

Any help at all? It would be most appreciated! I don't want to have to return this laptop if it can be solved simply. :)

What model? Are you running vista in high performance mode? Can you hear the fans working? Need some more information.

lol, don't hijack my thread now, Raven.

I have an m1530. The fans are working, and I'm in high performance (though I switched to Balanced and had the same problem with the game).

    Hey! A big bump!

I am still having these problems, and I have run two diagnostics on the system. I just checked the system temperature using SpeedFan, and it's at the same temperature it was before I started Far Cry 2, so I don't think it's a problem with the fans. It just decides to shut down when I try to start playing. Even Mass Effect shuts down pretty quickly, despite the fact that my machine is theoretically not a push-over.

I have the newest drivers from LaptopVideo2Go, so I don't know what else to do. Any update on solutions for this issue? Thanks!

solutions are forthcoming once the cause can be determined.

Based on the temps that you are showing, I do not see anything that would lead to shutdown. CPU or GPU would start throttling down if overheating was imminent. Otherwise, if you hit the max temp the computer would just reboot. Like I said though, I am not seeing that in the temps you posted.

Another possible cause for a random reboot could be related to the power supply. Back when I did a lot of overclocking on a crappy PSU I would occasionally reboot even when performance otherwise seemed fine. How does your power brick feel right after a reboot? Is it hot to the touch?

The power brick is just fine. I do notice that my fans start spinning and getting louder before ultimately my computer shuts down. I can't seem to play any games, even if I set the game to medium or low settings. Hell, I just bought Fallout 3, and even though its default is at High settings for the m1530, my computer doesn't agree when I try to play it. I'm pretty upset over this. :(

Ok here is a question that might be a no brainer but it happens.......Are you using the laptop in a table type surface or something soft, like your bed? Because if your blocking the fans then......ya you see the problem... If not dude I would call dell and have them fixed it...you paid for it to work not just shut down!

I am using it only on a table. Is there any way to check to see if the video card is screwed up without having to restart the computer? It was only a little while ago that I was able to play Call of Duty 4 on high settings without so much as a hiccup. Thanks for your help!

EDIT: Okay, I got Fallout 3 to work on low settings, but I don't really like being stuck there. I talked to Dell, and he just had me install the latest video driver. I tried high settings, and my computer still shut down right at the beginning of starting the game. :(

EDIT 2: Wow, great news. Not only am I going to get my video card and motherboard replaced, but I even convinced the guy to send a different LCD so I can have the same resolution that I had before they installed the new one! After being stuck at 1280x800, I'll be back at 1440x900! Happy days. Hopefully, that's all that I need. After nearly 8 months of problems, I hope this is the final time I have to complain!

can you play Fallout in windowed mode? You'll have to search on how to do this or if it is an option. Sometimes in a windowed mode you can see an error message pop up that you would not normally see when in full screen

Yeah, I play on low settings in Windowed mode, because in full-screen, I don't think my computer would be able to take it. Funny thing is, when I Ctrl+Alt to Chrome, the fans start to slow down, since I guess the stress went away. I hope with the new hardware the fans won't be as loud, and that this will fix the problem once and for all. Since I have gotten the laptop, I have had my motherboard, battery, and LCD screen replaced. Then again, this computer is refurbished, so I suppose it's to be expected.

lets hope for the best, i would think that new hardware means you can be shure that your comp will run smoothly from then on, i bought this one in mid july, when all that GPU phobia was emerging and it does get really hot, but not to the point where it restarts, so i havent asked for repairs of any kind, but i do hope the new GPUs run cooler, or im gonna slap someone :D

I agree. I am glad I bought the 8600 GT with GDDR3, but I am upset over how long things have taken to be fixed. I mean, I sent this laptop in to a repair facility for a week or two, and they never checked for this problem. I also got a new motherboard. Does that mean that they kept the same video card, but put in the new motherboard? Isn't the GPU soldered to the motherboard, or am I mistaken?
