How did you get them to agree to replace it???

Just had graphics card replaced in mine and now its crashing all the time, speakers wont work and second OS installed on partition wont boot at all - do I have a case for a full replacement?

I doubt it but if you have only just had your graphics card (i.e motherboard) replaced and are now having lots of problems I would contact Dell and get them to come back out. Having said that if you do not have a standard software build on your machine then I would try a rebuild first and check you have the right drivers installed.

It is strange that the engineer left with so much wrong. The chap who changed mine, had me boot up my machine and check all the hardware components individually to ensure they were all working. Only after we confirmed everything did he get me to sign the paperwork and disappear.

I am sure this work would be covered by some warranty.

    Really?

The tech who came to my house just took apart the computer, put it back together and left. No testing was done at all..

@OP....Don't let them replace it with another 1330....Have them replace it with the 1340, then you are safe from any GPU probs from the 1330.

And, I'm surprised they are not giving you a new 1340 vs. a refurb.

Call them up and ask for a new one vs. a refurb. based on your repair history. Obviously, they know that based on the service issues it's better to replace..then repair.

Good idea, Cin. I will told them I do NOT want the m1330 because I've read online of the infamous problem. Due to the holiday, they will send me a replacement after late December.

If it's the m1330, I will send it right back and complain. I've talk to a supervisor and got his email so if there is any problem arise, I will contact him and let him know.

No problem..I just think that not only is it in your best interest being the Customer, and the one that paid for a "top" lappy (then) that you get a good, valued replacement! One, that you won't have any replacement issues going forward. And, it's in Dell's vested interest not to replace with a refurbished one, that is known to have potential ongoing GPU issues. Most peeps are given new replacements that I have known.

Good luck, and please keep us all advised!

    Persistence does indeed payoff. :)

Did you get nearly as/more + the specs you had on your problematic lappy?

I got the laptop yesterday. First thing I did was delete all the partition, format and install W7 clean.

My impression is this laptop looks nicer than the m1330 but it feel noticeably heavier. The LED screen on the m1330 is brighter than the 1340 and the keyboard feel better to type than this laptop. I also experience alot of freezes with the driver provided on Dell website so after searching the forum, I found the Vista driver fixes that. The backlid keyboard is pretty nice.

Anyone know if the 6 cell m1330 battery is compatible with 1340?

    Thanks

I'll type in this thread since I too am getting a replacement studio xps 13 from Dell.

I bought the computer in the fall of 2008 and during the one year warranty time i had the motherboard replaced twice. The first time the graphicscard burned out and the other time was that it due to the overheating kept clocking down the processor to 33%.

It started doing that again during november(when the 1-Year warranty had expired) and on top of that the harddrive died so i contacted them through mail which probably took more time than using chat or calling someone but I had time to ait.

I asked them for a refund but they asked if they could replace it instead wich I agreed to under the condition that I would get a non-refurbished machine without overheating issues.

I got contacted again and since the 1330 has gone out of their producline they asked if a Dell studio XPS 13 would be acceptable and sent the planned spec.

The new spec lacked the LED screen so I sent a mail back asking for that which they were okay with. So the result of this replacement will be as follows:

I'm going from a 1330 with the following configuration:

    T8300 2.4Ghz 3MB cache 800 FSB
    LED-Display
    2X2 gig RAM 800Mhz
    400gb SATA 5400 rpm
    128mbnVidia 8400m GS
    Intel Wireless-N
    Windows Vista home premium

To the following Studio XPS 13

    P8700 2.53Ghz 3MB Cache 1066 FSB
    LED-Display
    2X2 gig RAM 1066Mhz
    500gb SATA 5400 rmp
    512MB nVidia 210m
    Dell wireless 1520 (802.11.n)
    Win 7 home premium 64bit

Which I consider a goo dreplacement. This time I'll buy a notebookcooler though :)

    Studio XPS 13?
How long ago did you start this exchange?
The studio 13 is not even a current line any longer at dell

I have yet to learn what my exchange will be for a $2400 XPS m1330 with the T9500 cpu.
Dell gave a dispatch number and said i will be contacted for my authorization of exchange when they put a few options together for me to decide on.
Mine is being handled via phone and not chat

I got the suggestion just recently and I know it isn't in the current line anymore but according to them they can build it. And Since their selection among 13inchers is a bit on the small side at the moment and the specs looks decent enough I think it will suit me.

Indeed if you can stay small footprint & still maintain a decent cpu with a gpu that does NOT suffer the same issues, go for it ;)
Looks to be an upgrade all around, at this point i let them know based on original cost, a totally built up Alienware M15X or top of the line business E6400 ATG or loaded Adamo would be fine or a simple REFUND.

I will see in a few days what offers they have for me.

My thoughts exactly. I've gotten so used to the 13 inches and it's a perfect compromise between portability and power for me. And 15+inchers looks so large beside it :)

If it turns out this has similar overheating issues I won't hesitate to return it and get a refund to pay for an asus ul30 or something though
