    Hi,

I have owned a M1330 with windows vista 32bit for a few years now and apart from a motherboard (graphics chip died) replacement, it has been really reliable and a great machine. With the release of Windows 7 I thought I would treat my XPS to a new hard driver (Intel X-25M G2 160Gb - with latest TRIM firmware).

As I have 4gb of RAM installed I thought I would go with the 64 bit of Windows 7 but have been having a minor driver issue and wonder if anyone can help:

    Ricoh R5C833 card reader
This worked perfectly under Vista 32bit but with Vista 64bit driver supplied by Dell on inserting an 8gb Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo Windows asks for it to be formatted. I have tried installing newer 7 x64 drivers for the XPS1340 and although these go in ok and it stops Windows trying to format the card, it still isn't able to read large capacity Sony Memory Stick cards. Has anyone else noticed this on x64 Windows? and is there a working driver out there?

I have also had a few compatibility issues with various bits of software I use and all this has made me think should I abandon this build and go back to a 32bit build?

If I did this, would I really notice any real performance drop? I accept that I will not be able to use the full 4gb of memory (more like 3.2gb) but if all the 32bit drivers just worked and I didn't have to worry about what applications are compatible or not then I am thinking it is going to save me any hassle in the future.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

For what its worth I had no such problem and I am now using the drivers from SXPS1645 which are Win7 drivers........
You could try to uninstall plus delete drivers and try reinstalling them or SXPS drivers.
Does this reformat waring only happen with The Sony cards?

Yes the card reader is only struggling with Memory Stick "Pro" Duo cards. If I use Memory Stick Duo cards then they work fine with all drivers. I have tried pretty much all the drivers available on Dell. The XPS Vista x64 drivers all result in Win7 issuing a card needs formatting message. All SXPS and other laptop Windows 7 x64 drivers issues the ping to say device connected but then it takes ages for the device icon to appear in the task bar and it pretty much never appears in the windows explorer and hangs when trying to eject. As I said when I try accessing these drives within the PSP they work fine. Also the standard Vista 32bit drivers in Vista work fine.

This is very frustrating as it is pretty much the only thing that is not working.

Tis ok. I have now resolved the problem.

Whilst I previously tried the latest Dell Driver for the SXPS (R234107) I used the included setup program to install them. I did as you said and completely uninstalled and deleted the exising drivers and then rebooted. I then did a scan of hardware and Windows installed drivers for the xSD and MMC reading capability but could not find a driver for the Sony MS reader. I pointed it at the driver folder and it installed 25/09/09 drivers for all three and then rebooted again. It now works for all card types......phew !!!

    Thanks for you help.
