I was wondering what a good cooling pad or fan would be for a Studio XPS 16 or if they are even worth getting. Thanks for the input.

There's been a bunch of discussion on coolers...
I'd say they are worth getting, espically if you are going to be playing games.

It will depend on your price point, seems these 2 coolers are the most debated between:
Zalman - Newegg.com - ZALMAN Notebook Cooler Model ZM-NC2000 Black
    NZGT - Newegg.com - NZXT Black Aluminum Notebook cooler w/ 3 120mm adjustable fans Model CRYO-001B
BUT I've been waiting for over a month for the NZGT to come back in stock with no luck...I picked up a small cheap cooler, but think I my be going with the Zalman eventually as the NZGT dosn't look like its ever coming back

I have the Zalmann NZC2000 for my XPS1640 and it seems to be pretty good, fits on it well etc... I have it set to roughly 50% all the time and when its either hot temperature wise outside (here in West Australia typical outside temps where I live is 35-45 degrees Celsius in the summer) or doing any photoshop/illustrator processing for work I turn it up to full.... where you can hear them running slightly

so more or less i would recommend one :)

    Hi,

I bought my SXPS 16 just 2 weeks ago. It came with a 9 cell battery which elevates the back of the laptop by almost an inch. I'm wondering if the Zalman ZM-NC2000 will fit because it looks like the cooler also raises the computer.

    Thanks
    Tang

Yeah a few people have wondered about this, and it fits fine.
It's better to have a gap between the cooler and the laptop so the 9cell is beneficial.

I'm thinking about getting the NC-2500plus when it's available in the UK. Anybody have any info on this?

I'm also planning on getting the Zalman ZM-NC2500 Plus. Just wish it was aluminum on top and not plastic. Otherwise it looks perfect.

I also suggest the Logitech Speaker Lapdesk N700 for using your laptop in bed or on a couch. The SXPS16 fits great on it and it gives you better sound as well. I own one and love it.

I think there is no conclusive evidence to show that Notebook coolers have a substantial effect on GPU,CPU temps. The other thing i have been worrying about it the design of the internal heat sink and fan. If you look at the 1645 air is being pulled from below which will cool the metal sink, if you increase the air flow under the notebook according to aero dynamics (air flows from high pressure to low pressure) you are creating a inverse affect for the fan (hard time pulling air)and over works it.

The other thing to consider i think is the conduction between the plastic or polymer base below with air, though it is true that the net amount of heat dispersed increases with air flow this amount is very very less compared to the internal sink and fan system.

Please comment your opinion on this.

Got my SXPS exactly a year and a day ago and had a cooling pad since. Had my 1645 since Nov. 2009 when it first came out and got my NC2000 cooling pad January. They actually do make a difference, but make sure the cooling pad lines up with your vents.

ok so a lot of people talk about the nc2000 but there are newer options like the 2500 and 3000 that i'd like to know peoples opinions on. Especially the 3000 which has one 220mm fan instead of 2 fans. What do think about this change in design?

I'd go for one which sucks air in from the sides rather than the bottom.

Honestly the NZXT is a great cooler that I have had for a few years. But the problem is getting more airflow from the unit since the standard fans are pretty weak. I had to bypass everything on the cooler and wire the 3 120MM upgraded fans (coolermaster 90CFM+ fans) to a spare molex from my server. Sure it makes the cooler not portable, but honestly who would carry this thing around? Not me. All in all 3 120MM fans blowing at 90+ CFMs cannot be beat for air cooling a laptop. Granted somebody could, if they were so inclined mechanically, could build something to match the NZXT and do the same thing I have for cheaper.
