I have an m1530 with the T8300 and 8600gt. I have the cpu running at the full 2.4ghz while plugged in, and with maybe 20-30% cpu usage, the fan is on full speed and at a smoltering 73c most of the time. The 20-30% usage is coming from outlook, music, etc. Nothing crazy. The gpu is also running at 80c at the vista desktop. Is this normal temps for this thing?

Ill also note that I have it undervolted to 1.05v. Though cpuz reports 1.163v

Seems pretty high. I have the T9300 with 8600gt I have never exceeded 55C on the CPU and the GPU maxes at around 78C during gaming.

Is your Speedstep working? It shouldn't be at full speed with only twenty to thirty percent load...

73C is still a full 20C+ over what he should be idling at with basic computer usage, even at his full GHz.

Yeah, I realized I didn't know if I was interpreting his post properly. The thing is, if his Speedstep is disabled or not working, he'll be pumping the full voltage into the processor all the time. Furthermore, I'd trust the CPUZ voltage reading and say that his undervolt isn't registering properly either...

I have rmclock force it up to the 2.4 while plugged in because I hate waiting for speedstep to up clock the cpu when I make quick, cpu intesive, movements. I can tell a big diff in the gui of both osx and vista when I have speedstep enabled vs disabled with the clock at 2.4.

Just for kicks I disabled rmclock and let it drop the cpu speed down to 1.2, still sitting at 68-70c.

Ive had this for almost a year now... seems to me like we have some failing thermal paste. big suprise there, this machine has been nothing but let downs.

Ok, I'd check two things: your load temps with or without Speedstep (should be the same) and then your 20-30% temps with Speedstep turned on. If loading your processor pushes the temps even higher (like into the 80-90 range), the problem probably isn't with Speedstep. If turning Speedstep on drops your 20-30% temps significantly, then the extra heat may be due to disabling Speedstep.

    Your m1530 sounds overcooked.

Was your Speedstep disabled through BIOS or solely through RMClock? I'm not familiar with the stock voltages on the T8300, but I'm pretty sure the VID on the lowest multiplier should be in the 0.8v to 0.9v range. If you disable RMClock on startup and reboot, what kind of voltages are you looking at?

Also, is your fan running much? If you've had the machine for a long time, you may have significant heatsink dust buildup.

Appears to be an OS issue. If i reboot in server 08 the vid drops down to 1.063 (should still go lower?) and the cpu runs much cooler. Maybe its time to upgrade that vista install to win7...

Personally, I think it should still be lower, but if someone with a T8300 could report their stock voltages, it's probably better to get a first-hand account.

Installing win7 beta now. hopefully this solves all my issues; non working webcam in vista 64, no hibernation, etc.

Have you tried taking off the back plate that covers the fan and blowing out all the dust?

Change the thermal paste over. The Dell stuff will be dry and old now, and pretty much useless.

Changing thermal paste really helped lower my temps. CPU temps are slightly lower by staying below 55C and idling around 40C. GPU on the other hand, from max of 85C down to current max of 75C! Idle temps also from 65C down to 60C.
