I've tried connecting my XPS 1330 to my t.v. with an HDMI cable, and whenever I have the cable plugged into the t.v. (an Astar - cheap!) the computer shuts off and won't start again until I unplug the end from the t.v. The cable end going in to the laptop doesn't seem to make a difference - just the end in the t.v. The t.v. is set to receive the HDMI input.

The laptop is only a month or two old, and I was excited to try watching Netflix "Watch Now" on my t.v. but it's not working.

Any suggestions, short of upgrading my television?

    Thanks,
    Liz

Shuts off as in totally off? Not lights on or anything? Depending on which options you choose, the M1330 can make your TV the primary screen and turn off your notebook screen. You'd need to fiddle around with the nVidia Control Panel to set it to what you prefer. Another thing you could try is when the notebook turns off, try Fn+F8 which is suppose to switch between the monitors.

Yes, off as in totally off, no lights or anything. And it won't turn back on as long as the cable is still connected to the t.v. When I try Fcn F8 it says nothing attached (I obviously can't use it when the cord is connected at both ends).

How do I access the nVidia Control Panel?

    Thanks,
    Liz

Right click desktop and there it is in the dropdown menu

    Alternative:
Goto Control Panel > Nvidia Control Panel

Ok, I'm in the nVidia Ctrl Pnl, and it doesn't give me any display options other than my laptop screen. I have choices of "rigorous display detection" or "force television detection" but without being able to keep the laptop turned on, I'm not sure how it's supposed to detect the t.v.

This is frustrating, but thanks for your help so far.

    Same problem on my m1530
    and on my friend's Gateway

And the weird thing is the hdmi cable used to work fine (same cable and tv set up). It just started doing this when I moved in at school.

so - should i get another HDMI cable and try or call dell and get a call out ?

do we think that this is a hardware protection mechanism to protect the laptop in case of issue with the cable / power issues trough the HDMI port ?
