I recently bought the XPS M1330 from a friend and wasn't familiar with the current issues caused by the nVidia GeForce 8400M GS. Lately, I've been looking for a solution to the problem. I was reading about the Cooper Mod in another thread and it just seems like a temporary fix.

So, I was wondering has anyone tried manually installing the Intel version of the motherboard, since it seems to have no overheating problems. Has anyone tried a different motherboard to fix the overheating?

Well, I can't speak to actually changing out the mb on the 1330 but I can point you at a couple of helpful links for the procedure if you haven't seen them already...

    1. http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/SYSTEMS/xpsm1330/en/sm/sysboard.htm#wp1000473

Also, you have an addtional option - if the unit is was still covered under warranty, be sure to complete all transfer of ownership docs so the warranty and unit will transfer to you. If in fact the unit has an issue, Dell will cover it. The warranty was also extended by 1 year (I believe, could be wrong on this - search the forums to confirm) for the M1330.

    Warranty/Ownership transfer

The Copper Mod while inventive is nothing more than a band-aid fix for the issue (IMO). It will help, but it wont prevent failure at some point. Its up to you how to proceed of course...

By wanting to change to an Intel GPU motherboard, I conclude that you won't be gaming or using heavy graphical applications. If that's the case, a copper mod will be enough. It will cost you a couple of bucks, compared to replacing the entire motherboard. I'd do a copper mod. You decide.

Nope, I don't plan on playing any games on the laptop...but I'm not buying a new motherboard right now...my warranty runs out next month, so I just want to be prepared to fix it.

For now, I'll try the cooper mod and maybe the undervolting technique.
