I downloaded the 64-bit version of Vista SP2, deinstalled all of my security software and tried to install the SP.
It chugged for a while and returned:
Installation was not successful
A system error prevented the service pack from installing. Please download and run the "Check for System Update Readiness" tool at ....
If the "Check for System Update Readiness" tool doesn't fix the problem, visit the Microsoft website for more information.
I downloaded the tool a few weeks ago and ran it and it took forever and didn't do anything. A subsequent attempt at installing SP2 failed. Anyone run into this or know of a Dell solution to it?

You need to have Vista SP1 installed before trying to install SP2 so if you have not done so you'll have to download and install SP1 reboot when done install SP2 there after.
PS: I take it your OS is 64bit.. -
Vista SP1 was installed quite some time ago.

I checked the event logger and the failure code is 0x8007000d. Will try to find out more info with this code. -

Another thread at Microsoft: this appears to be a severe corruption problem and they're working on it.
