Can screens break on their own?

    Is it possible?

My friend just got a brand new alienware 14x, he has been using it for about 2weeks, and yesterday he got home only to find out the center of the internal screen(not the plastic cover) cracked, juices leaking out. The external plastic cover stayed untouched, there's no sign of drop(not a single scratch on the rig).

His apartment does have 2 kids(around 5years old), which I suspect might be...guilty? But...could it have broke on its own?

Fortunately the screen was the only broken part, the image will still show up albeit the leaking liquids make it look messed up.

Nah dude not possible. Sounds like a baby hammer fisted the alien logo on the lid.

Your friend should keep the computer away from the kids, not just to avoid damage, but the liquid inside LCDs is usually toxic. Tell your friend not to touch the liquid with his bare hands.

The plastic cover is flexible. It is entirely possible to break the fragile screen inside without damaging the plastic (via child induced blunt force trauma). If you said that the backlight burnt out, or if you were having dead rows or columns of pixels it might just be a bad screen, but cracking doesn't just happen on its own.

I hope he got accidental damage coverage with his new laptop.

The screen can also break if it was picked up and slammed down thus causing impact to the component itself. It happened to me when I had an HP Pavilion. Not knowing how fragile it was when I just sat it down on the carpet and spider web-effect started forming on the LCD....kaput! That was all it took.

Kids dropped something on the closed laptop, or they opened it up and stabbed it. Or something like that. It is highly unlikely it broke on its own, let alone break in such a way as to cause the physical damage you are describing.

I agree with everyone so far, that type of damage doesn't happen on it's own.

Thanks for the rreplys, it's probably the kids then. His replacement screen just arrived and I will be helping him swap it out later today.
