So i'm gonna order an xps 16 core i5 possibly this week on the dell website. However, i've heard that i can get a better price if i call them and order it? i'm wondering if this is true and if so, can i still use the student discount offer if ordering by phone?

well... the good thing about ordering a alptop from Dell over the phone is that you can always coax the rep a bit to knock off a few hundred bucks...and on an expensive model like the xps 16, you can easily save quite a lot of money  . If they are currently giving out any students' discount, then you should be able to avail it no matter how you order.... :) cheers

Still I think, Studio XPS 16 is a highly priced laptop with older components/features.

Mainly it lacks in better GPU with i5, switchable graphics (else the on board graphics will get rotten without being used), usb 3.0 and better heat management. And one have to pay extra $ for other basic components like Intel Wireless, bluetooth, etc ... :(

    Hey!

See this thread, it is a bit older, but Les put it together..and it has been very helpful to many Dell forum members :) It has helped me in the past!!

A How-To on Making The Best Computer Deal

A good thing to do, is to "configure" your order (actually configure a few Orders w/different price points, etc), online and "save it to your cart" that way you have it in front of you when working with a Rep by phone or via chat. You have bit more power that way.

When talking to a Rep & trying to get the best deal..if you dont feel your getting the the best price you can..dont feel bad about ending the phone conversation & moving on to the next Rep. Most Peeps dont get the best deal on the very first Rep. So, it will take patience.

And, the Reps do have it their means, to give you a good deal : )

Saying something like: "I am ready to purchase by end of this conversation, what is the best deal you can give me" may help!!!

With your Student Discount, you need to be ordering that thru the EPP Portal (Student Discount Portal). And, yes..you can do that via EPP Phone, Chat or straight online yourself.
