    Hey there, Noob here :)
    Just bought a XPS

    2.0Ghz Core 2 Duo
    3Gb DDR2
    120Gb 7200RPM
    8600GT 256Mb
    1280x800 TFT

Decided to crank up the ram from 2 since Vista is such a hog. Also thought the full speed HDD would be of use for games.

Used to built comps, last one being an AMD 3200+, 9800Pro rig for Half Life 2.

Need the laptop for Work now though as im on the move quite a lot not to mention Finishing off the last year of my Degree.

Names Richard, im 20 and Work as a Structural Designer in Scotland :)

Question for you lot though. Always bought the XP OEM when building in the past. What kind of disk comes with the Laptop? and could I if i wanted remove Vista and Put on XP Prof while still having the option to put vista back on later?

( Quite a few design software packages have minimal Vista Support you see.. XP is SOO much more stable! )

There's a thread around here somewhere for installing XP. It's possible, but you'll have to do a bit of downloading for additional drivers, as there's only Vista ones available with the system.

I'm running XP at the moment on the 1530, it's running very well.

Congrats on your new purchase! I'm sure it will serve you well, you can also play Half Life 2 easily on this machine!

That old rig is set up to a 42" 1080p tv and pretty much dedicated to Half Life 2... Pees all over the 360 / PS3 version of the Orange box to hehe.

Thanks looking forward to getting it :D

Ill have a look at the XP tips.. would be nice to use the power of the laptop for more than just the OS!

My #1 tip is to immediately call Dell and ask them to downgrade the RAM to 1 GB and buy it yourself on Newegg. You can get 4 GB for about the same price.

I would of gotten a better processor, a T8300 at least, the 7200RPM hard drive isnt that much better for gaming, i would of got a higher capacity hard drive at 5400RPM, and yes i would get the least amount of RAM and then buying it somewhere else, a 4GB would cost about $50.. Maybe higher screen resolution too?

cheers, 2Gb was standard and the extra Gig cost £15 so im not to worried about that. its really built on a budget to be honest. Was thinking of the T8300 but for what id really be using it for I dont think the extra £110 ( $220 ! ) was worth the performance gain..

    2.4Ghz would be nice though!!

Also I like gaming at a native resolution.. I figure that since the 8600GT is not the most burning GPU out it would be a good idea to keep with the slightly lower res screen. maybe actually be able to play Crysis at that res!
