Does anyone know if an outside soucre other than DELL provide the slot load Blurray player for the XPS? I have just spoke to a Dell rep who said if i wanted to upgrade I would have to buy it and send it to them to service and install.

Is it possible for me to do it my self ? Or is it best to send it in. Again I dont even know if this is all possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks Josh

You could order the drive directly from panasonic that's the provider of the drive I have, it's pricey though. I don't think it'd be too hard to install yourself.

No internal slot load, I want to install it myself. Although if the external will be alot cheaper then I might have to bite the bullett and get one.

The PAN-UJ-235A is the blu-ray burner drive that dell used in my laptop I don't know what the model is for just the reader. it's the first one on the list. Blu-ray Burner

You might find a better deal searching for that drive on Ebay or something. Just a tip.

As for replacing it, I'm pretty sure it's not too hard to remove your current one and install a new one. Probably a few screws and a cable or two. I'm guessing (I haven't done it) I'm sure there are people who have though.

Im sure theres some tutorials out there, if thsts all thats involved then I will be ok with it . However I wont be doing it for a while as like you said the Drive is pretty dam expensive :D. And I dont know if its worth it especially as I have the 900P not the full HD screen.

lol it might not be, unless you intend to like use the HDMI to watch a blu-ray on your TV, but if you were going to do that maybe you'd just buy a blu-ray player lol.

We have one at my house so maybe its not worth it if I wont see a benefit on my laptop with my screen choice. Might buy an external then so I can read and write if needed.

It can be a minor pain to swap the disc drive. It involves removing the keyboard/touch pad and going deep into the system, and it can be a little tricky putting the keyboard back on right. I rate the technical difficulty as "medium." There's somewhere around 24 screws to remove and replace during the process.

You go through the keyboard? O_O I thought you could do that via the back panel. Much more of a hassel.

Not to mention that the Panasonic bluray drives suck pretty badly too.

I have an external samsung slotload usb dvd burner that is still faster than this internal SATA bluray burner...

It's probably faster due to the firmware on this laptop limiting the speed of the drive.

I suppose you can also take the drop in speed as you have it intergrated and protable :)
