Once again I came *really* close to trying a Mac, but once again I think I'll stick with Dell. :) I have a Latitude currently, and I've had Inspiron in the past. Now I kinda like what I see in the XPS models.

Anyway, I'm looking for the best possible screen (within these two laptops only). Which has the brighter/sharper screen:

    The m1330 or the m1530?

    Thanks!

They both have high quality screens, but i'd go with the 1530 as it is larger too. Good choice on not going macbook, i just had to fix one to 6 month old backlight went out.

I originally ordered the m1330 with the LED screen. I ended up with a grainy one, although the non grainy ones are certainly very crisp. The 1280 x 800 on a 13.3" was just too small for me so I went up to the 1530.

I got the M1330 with the non-LED screen, and it is quite crisp and vibrant. I have no complaints.

The same resolution on a smaller screen = sharper image

    less power consumption as well

Has the grainy issue been fixed? Or is it a "luck of the draw" thing?

Oh, one more thing I just thought of...

Anyone happen to know what *type* of screen panel these two laptops use? Like S-IPS, S-PVA, TN, etc.?

Whilst we're following this line of discussion here, may I also ask what the differences and benefits of each actually are?

    Thanks.

I'm not sure about laptop monitors... but with external monitors, S-IPS panels are known to be the best you can get. S-PVA is not quite as good, but not bad (they actually have better blacks & contrast). TN panels are the worst, and not recommended if you do any photo editing or graphic design type work.

I think most laptops are TN. I saw a 1330 in Best Buy today, and was really surprised by how nice the screen was, and this was just with florescent backlighting, not the LED that we'd be going with. Viewing angles looked great.

Thank you, where could I discover what Dells 2408WFP is? This isn't the kind of thing they include in their marketing.

Yep, absolutely. I'm actually considering the 1330 just BECAUSE it's one of the few computers that offers LED backlighting. It's got at least these advantages:

-Looks much better and it's brighter-after seeing it on a Macbook Pro I wanted EVERY LCD screen transitioned as fast as possible
-effectively lasts forever without dimming. A florescent backlight is going to be noticeably dimmer long before you quit using the system (is it like half brightness by year two or something?). LED apparently won't burn out for 20-30 years...I'm pretty sure the system will be a door stop a bit before that :D
-no mercury-easier to dispose of, plus no danger if the thing gets cracked open
-no ultra-violet radiation emitted like florescent lights emit. the danger from florescent lights is small (increases cancer risks in the single digit percentages from years of exposure if I'm remembering right) but real (of course we're all getting bombarded by florescent lights at work, in our TVs and desktop monitors, etc., but still, it's one less thing)

I don't remember the exact technology, but it's NOT TN. That's never made public in marketing materials, and frankly the manufacters lie about stats like colors displayed, etc.

All 22" screens are TN, 6-bits per pixel, as are the cheaper 24" screens (like Dell's lower end model, HP's thing, etc.) You kind of have to check reviews from sites like Anandtech, or just know if a 22 or 24" panel is selling for the price of another 20" panel, odds are it's not using good technology.

    Hi,

I have a 1530, and have the High Res, glossy widescreen (1440x900), and it's the LG. And I am absolutely satisfied with it, no complaints here! ;) :D

The screen clarity and viewing is fantastic ;) :)

Hope that helps you ;) :D

I have a M1530, and it came with a crappy screen. Had a dell tech come out but he somehow broke the bezel on the screen so it wouldnt close all the way.

Well the screen he changed it to was alright but I thought my HP was better,
but once my replacement comes in and its not that good, ill probably switch it out to a M1330

It uses an S-PVA panel. But I'd hold on buying one until a later revision. I was about to snag one, but decided to hold off. Just Google "2408WFP problems" (or similar) to see what I mean.

The only issue I've heard with it is it has a slightly longer input lag then most LCD screens. Like an extra frame or two, but it is noticeable if compared directly in games. Otherwise it seems fantastic, and is still probably what I'd get (except I'd really like a monitor with LED backlighting...)

Perhaps they sent you one of the inferior Samsung screens. You really should compare LG CCFL vs. LG LED to be fair.

What do you think of dell studio 1737 led screen which code name is SEC 5442? I bought my laptop from Poland just because the factory in Ireland has been closed..
