So I have been searching for a 5.1 surround sound solution for my upcoming SXPS 16 and have run into a couple of problems. The only real solution I see being viable is the Creative X-fi Xtreme Audio Notebook Sound Card (fits into Expresscard slot), but apparently the upgrade kit for the card that converts audio into true 5.1/7.1 is discontinued for some reason (or else not available). I have been looking for a way to connect my SXPS to my Logitech Z-5500 Digital 5.1 Speaker system that I just bought and this seemed the best way, but now I am not sure what could work. I found that the Creative Sound Card DOES have an optical out (1/8 " mini jack) and was wondering if I could get true 5.1 sound from that through a mini optical to optical adaptor that can connect to my Logitech system. If that doesn't work, does anyone have any suggestions to good solutions to connect my SXPS to my Logitech speakers?
    Thanks a lot!

I would try to get this moved to hardware or accessories section for better results. My opinion, skip Creative products. You can get much better audio products for a similar price (what is your budget exactly?). Check out the Turtle Beach Audio Advantage SRM USB and read reviews.

The XPS16 outputs analogue 5.1 via the 3 x headphone / mini jack plug sockets so just input those straight into your speaker amp using 3 x mini jack plug leads.

Correct. It amazes me just how many people have no idea about this. On Dell's own forum people were saying you need a "break out card" and crap to get 5.1 audio output... Um.. no they don't. IDT did a great job with Dell and their XPS 16. Jack sensing inputs, ability to output 5.1 via analogue, the awesome array mic with background noise suppression (something I wish my desktop's x-fi did..). And if you want to go digital out, use the HDMI for true 7.1 hardware surround sound with the audio controller build onboard the ATI 4670.

I was very close to getting a x-fi express card but decided against it. IDT's software is also top notch. The SRS is a nice touch as well. I also love the dedicated second headphone out. I can watch a movie or listen to music while someone else uses skype and can carry on a conversation separately all from the same pc.

All you do is go to your control panel. Find IDT HD Sound, once you have opened it. Click on Independent (R.T.C) Headphones, then on your right side you have a box named "Jacks" with 3 circles that are listed underneath the Left Side Panel, you click one and it gives you the option to change the settings to rear, center, & mid speaker. Do this for all three circles.
