or is it too early? I know the m1730 was released in september of last year.....so does it normally take about a year in a half or 2 years for dell to put out a new gaming notebook? :)

There's nothing to update until at least Montevina and the high-end 9-series GPUs come out.

Much too early, especially since they just recently added the SLI 8800m GTX to it.

I think the successor will probably arrive next summer, since it usually takes about a year for the high-end laptop GPUs to be released.

Keep in mind that this system (chassis) was just introduced. If you recall, the previous XPS chassis was around for 6 years, maybe? XPS Gen2, M170, M1710 (and the inspirons) all used the same platform.

A lot of money goes into design and I think Dell future-proofed themselves with the massive space of the M1730. Therefore, I believe there will be minor refreshes to the M1730 and not something entirely new. Look for a refresh maybe over the summer and something a little bit more maybe before christmas.

I was planning on getting a M1730 with an X9000 and the 8800 GTX. Is it worth waiting for the new chipset?

Does it need one? The M1730 currently had the best parts parts available, so Dell are unlikely to bring out a successor yet.

It depends if you mind waiting. There will always be something new that's coming out "soon", it's perfectly possible for be forever waiting for updates and never actually buy something.

Dell won't be releasing a new 17" gaming notebook anytime soon, especially because alienware wich is their subsidary company just released their new 17" notebook the M17x. As you can see from previous releases m15x, new gaming desktops and dells 630, Dell and Alienware is trying NOT to compete against each other and it would make sense.

I'm not really talking about a new platform. I am just wondering if the new chipset will have a major advantage over the current one. On Dell's part I don't see this more than a different motherboard for the same M1730 chassis.
