    Hey,

First thread here. I have been watching the new XPS M1530 for awhile now, waiting for the high resolution screens. And I somehow missed the $200 gift card and $200 coupon special (expired Thursday). It was also combinable with the current $669 discount. The $669 discount is still running, but does anyone have any idea when the gift cards and/or new coupons will be back? The $669 is a good discount but they only offer it because of the 3 GB of memory and 3 years of warranty. The warranty and memory are $650 to upgrade so they are pretty much just giving you those without a real "money" discount. I have been trying to get them to remove these options but no luck so far. I have spoken with 3 reps and they all wont do it. Has anyone had any luck getting them to remove the warranty and memory? Any particular rep I should speak with?

    Thanks,

    Eddie

The information on dell's website says the 699 runs through the 31st of Jan. It's just a toss up if they will offer additional coupons.

Dell generally runs new specials every two-three weeks.
With the new 1680x1050 LCD everyone seems to be waiting for a deal including that as the original deal you mentioned only was available with the 1280 resolution LCD. LED is coming in early 2008 as well though a little more money.

But the thing is XPS was pretty much stingy on XPS special thus far. I think every sales is "WHILE SUPPLY LASTS. LED or not I think it's going to be several more moth before these kind of deal hits. I could be wrong especially Michael Dell took over. But anyway you put it special they have now is VERY good. And I definitely suggest someone who is looking a new notebook

You sound like your are from Slickdeals asking to downgrade the warranty and RAM to save money. Well they are giving you a great deal and lots of RAM and a long warranty. Why would you want to try to take those off to save a few dollars just to buy the RAM again to save just a few dollars? I hope you know one of the RAM slots are under the keyboard.

You are incorrect, both memory slots are accessable by removing bottom cover.

You obviously don't understand how Dell operates... So I'll give you a few pointers. This deal, while it is a large sum off is not that great. Dell charges $250 for the 3 GB memory upgrade, now why would I pay $250 for 3 GB when I could buy 4 GB and install myself in 5 minutes for $60?

What they are doing is giving you a warranty, which you don't even need because if your laptop last past the included 1 year warranty you got a reliable laptop. They also don't even give you accidental dammage, that is another $100. So if you break it down it is not a good deal at all. All you get a quadruple-priced memory, a warranty you don't need and about $60 off.

To everyone else, thanks for the replies. I'll keep watching the Dell site and see what comes up. I am thinking there should be some good deals around new years with Penryn coming out.

How is that not a good deal? Take away the overpriced ram and it will still cost you $1743 plus money to upgrade RAM on your own. And for me a 3 year warranty is a must, everyone I know has been very glad they got it and have used it. And there will be no deals when Penryn comes out, they want to make as much money as they can. This is the good new years deal, after this there won't be any good deals for a while.

a lot of people seem to be waiting for penryn chips but you have to ask yourself how considerable the performance gain is and do you really need it? Most people won't even see the difference or even use current or new processors to the max.
Dell will probably not release XPS units with the new chipsets until their current deals expire. After that, you'll probably be hard pressed to find a deal as good as the current one.

I originally placed an order on the 1st day of release for a m1530. I had to cancel that one and placed a new order on the 21st of december. I was able to upgrade my processor, screen, hard drive, RAM, and add office home/student from the original order and still save over $200 from my first build(which also included the warrnty). So at this point, I can't be convinced that the current promo isn't a great deal.

I just explained why it is not that good... And I don't know how you calculated $1743 without the memory upgrade, but if you got them to downgrade the memory it would be $1,150 for a nicely configured system including the warranty. Get them to take off the 3 year warranty and you would be looking at $731. Working from there you could get a top of line system for about $1,100 with tax. Now that would be a deal.

Yes, of course, Penryn will offer no real world difference or boost, it will just be a glorified and overpriced Santa Rosa (except for the lower power usage). But my reason for waiting would just be to see if the Santa Rosa chips come down. And also to see if they have any specials around the time of release.

I still say it is not that good, for reasons outlined in previous posts. But if you think you got a good deal and are happy with it... more power to you.

well the current sant rosa's are 4mb cache the penyrn will be 6 so you actually might notice a bit of pep behind the penryn. also you will have a bit more battery life due to it drawing less power.

Your not making any since. The cheapest 1530 is about $950 so I don't know how the hell you for $731. I think that you are thinking you can get less specs and still get the $669 discount. With the $669 discount the minimum you can get is 3GB RAM and 2.2 Ghz processor. Go try and configure an HP system to this one. Sure it is not a $700 savings, but you will still save at least $300.
