    Hi All,

I'm looking to get myself a laptop from the dell outlet, though I haven't decided which yet

Most if not all laptops these days come with glossy screens which I really don't want, I was thinking of buying a cheapish laptop with a glossy low res screen and then replacing it with a 1920 fullHD AntiGlare display,

assuming this is possible? I have some questions

If the dell website doesn't even offer an antiglare display option on a specific laptop does this mean it won't be possible to purchase an aftermarket AntiGlare display for that laptop?

Are laptop screens quite generic or very specific to each laptop?

What connectors do laptop screens use? is it possible that a low res panel will use a different connector to a high res panel?

    Thanks :)

Which system are you looking at? The XPS 17 has a matte FHD screen. It is the one referred to as anti-glare (AG). Dell might tell you it is glossy on the phone (that's been happening a lot it seems), but it is matte. The 15" does not have a matte option out of the factory though, no.

You can try to find alternate screens on the market. Just because Dell doesn't offer it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. If you get a non-FHD screen though, you might have to get a new display ribbon. Depending on what system you are looking at, look in this forum for a thread about replacing the screen. There are ones for the XPS 15 and 17 (l501x and l701x). Even though they are for the previous generation core-i components, the chassis and monitors are all the same.

    Thanks for the replies :)

the ones I have been looking at so far are:

    XPS L502x
    XPS L702x
    Inspiron 15R - N5110
    Inspiron 17R - N7110
    Latitude E6520

if I try and configure a brand new xps 17 I have these options:

and if I try and configure a lattitude e6520 I have these options:

None of the above list an antiglare/matte option

One thing that worries me about the current crop of Dell antiglare screens is this, apparently the vostro on the left below has what dell thinks is an antiglare screen

Vostro 3750 : Anti glare screen is a joke : screen is a mirror! - Laptop General Hardware Forum - Laptop - Dell Community

    http://en.community.dell.com/cfs-fi...onents.Files/3518/2451.vostro3750brillant.JPG

I was leaning towards the E6520 as it looks more likely that the business laptops will come with antiglare screens, but with the xps I'll get a better supported + faster gpu

Is there much difference in how hard it is to get hold of 15inv17in fullHD matte screens, and is there much difference in how hard it is to get hold of xps vs latitude parts?

Note that if you're getting the Latitude E6520, most of the screens are good except for the 1366x768 and multi-touch 1366x768. The image quality will be terrible on the 1366x768 screens, and the resolution is so low that it makes things look huge. Don't buy a Latitude E6520 with any of the 1366x768 screen options, upgrade to 1600x900 at the very minimum.

Regarding the XPS 17, is there a FHD WLED AG option or something?

There should be an AG option, I've seen people in the UK getting it...(guessing the OP is in UK by the currency...unless I am off on my currency symbol recollection).

I have just ordered an XPS 17 with the anti glare screen. However I have been waiting since the latest range was released for them to release a 1080 AG screen and bit the bullet and called to be told they could spec it if ordered over the phone. So my advice is call them and get a price. on the XPS 17 I was quoted £90 extra on top of the basic specification of the 900pixel screen.

Yea, that's about right. It's $100 upgrade in the US. Well worth it.

Well I have seen others who have ordered it and been charged £110 and it is a €110 upgrade on other dell sites in the EU.

However, I did screw Dell over a bit. For example after I got my quote for the machine I asked about extending the warranty and they offered £200 to bring it from 1 year to 3 years warranty and 3 years accidental damage, declined as it was well over my budget and after a lot of messing about and can we call you back requests, I ended up somehow with the original quoted price and a 3 year warranty.

And that's just the best freebee I managed to get out of them at the ordering stage. The machine hasn't even arrived yet and if anything is wrong when it turns up I will certainly negotiate for more, though I hope to not need to call Dell up regarding the machine for the next 3 years.

    Kinda sad in a way.

When in Mexico I saw a rug merchange haggling about (of course, that's expected), he got more than he should have for the rug...and apparently, the American did not notice the $10 he gave the man was a $20. And the rug merchant did not say a thing.

Sorry, just took me back. Anyway, from what I hear, you will enjoy the AG screen....

Just rec'd my 1080 AG screen xps17 today and I have to say I am quite pleased with it. Not had a chance to test the refresh rates but the brightness range, text definition and lack of any pixel defects is excellent. I expected less from the reviews but I am quite pleased.

OK I have never owned a professional level display but I have owned 2 gaming laptops previous and a variety of other laptop hardware with varying screen quality and this display bests even the better ones so far in every way. I would much recommend if you dont have a need for the "perfect" screen.

Thanks for all the replies :)

In the end I got myself a Dell Latitude E6520 with a full HD matte display, the panel is a lgd02d9 and it works great outside :)
