I just found out that my brand new Studio XPS 16 which I order just under 2 weeks ago is already obsolete. Well I'm being a little over dramatic but the 5730 is now available for the Studio XPS 16 here in Australia. Where I had ordered it with the 5650. So I had to go and see what the differences were. On paper it appears there aren't any differences:

ATI Mobility Radeon? HD 5650 GPU Specifications

ATI Mobility Radeon? HD 5730 GPU Specifications

Check out the "Speed and Feeds".

It appears that the 5650 has variable speed and lower power consumption. Am I missing anything?

As far as i can see, the 5730 has double the memory data rate as the 5650. 3,2 Gbps vs 1,6 Gbps. I dont know how big a difference it makes though.

I wonder how the 5650 is clocked in the XPS16?

The 5730 is technically identical to the 5650. It just has higher clock rates and though more power consumption while being a little bit faster.
I think the variable speed at the 5650 only means that the manufacturers can decide which clock rate they want to have ;)
The 5730 is _NOT_ based on the 57xx desktop series!

Yep, don't worry the 5730 is only marginally better then the 5650, definitely nothing to lose sleep over.

If they are nearly identical, will you be able to use some sort of software to increase the clocks of the 5650 to make it perform as the 5730?

Any input on the differences in memory data rate? (See #2)

They both have 128bit memory bus with 800MHz memory clock speed. Both With DDR3 and Memory bandwidth: 25.6 GB/sec . I think it is a faulty statement...

WOW, I wonder if you could you provide me with the details of your purchase. please..

As far a performance is concerned, checking out some videos on youtube 5730 seems just a bit better than the 5650.

    and congrats for the purchase!

I guess it would be upgraded too coz now if you check dell india site only 5730 gpu is available and not 5650.

    Sigh

If only there was a way for us 4670 owners to get our hands on the 5730.

From what I understand, the upgrade isn't that great, nowhere near the difference in the upgrade from the 3670 to the 4670 was. A slight performance increase but not astounding. And although there's DX11 support, it's debatable how useful that actually is because activating DX11 effects like tessellation will most probably hit the performance too much on a mid range notebook chipset that current games push to its limits, let alone future, DX11 heavy ones.

I'd say it's worth having if you're ordering a new system, but not worth worrying about too much if you have a 4670 system.

The power consumption of the 5730 is almost half of the 4670. Less heat. better battery life. :)

Well, just my two cents but I find my overclocked 4670 works great on all thee latest games on somewhat pretty high settings. When I am on battery and want to max my battery life, I bring the clock of the GPU lower. I am getting a little over two hours which isn't too bad. The 4670 is a nice chip, I am not jealous of the 5730 chip. :)

I thought the 4670 was like 35W TDP?

Hey guys I'm trying to track down the clock speed on the 5650 in the Studio 17 to compare it to the 5730 in the XPS 16. Anyone know what Dell set the 5650 to?

    nevermind, found it. 550/800 core/mem

Is anyone else getting the 5730 instead of their ordered GPU? I'm still waiting for my laptop to be delivered. They originally scheduled deliver for this Tuesday (15 June) but it's now been delayed and I'm still waiting to be told when it's going to be delivered. It's been stuck in "Arrive in Australia" for the last 4 days. I've been emailing my sales rep and the delivery company but they keep saying they'll get back to me. :'(
    Perhaps I'm being too impatient?
