Hey everybody. Im gonna install 64 bit vista when i get my m1530 in 2 days. I am going to use the reformat/bloatware guide. I got all the drivers i need. My question is the AHCI Driver file is a executable file. iata82_enu.exe. Do i copy this file to CD or do i need to install it on my computer first and then get the files. I very confused about this AHCI lol. Im sure its very simple.

You can use an unzip program to open the exe. Then you will see the driver files. If you have Vista SP1, no need to worry. The AHCI drivers are built in SP1.

    Does it really?

Either you download the floppy version driver, which includes the extracted drivers:
    http://downloadmirror.intel.com/16014/eng/f6flpy64.zip

Or you extract them from the archive you downloaded already:

    IATA82 _ENU.exe -a -pc:\AHCI

You'll find the drivers in C:\AHCI then.

What? Vista RTM (that's build 6000, not SP1s 6001) has support for AHCI, that's why people have problems with installing XP on some newer machines that have it always enabled.

You shouldn't need any drivers for hard drives on Vista unless you're using RAID.

Actually the Microsoft AHCI driver (MSAHCI.SYS) in RTM build 6000 has many incompatibilities with known device. E.g. with the ICH8M SATA Controller in M1330 (I think the same southbridge is used in M1530). Most likely it will bluescreen upon reboot. This is fixed in the later MSHACI.SYS drivers, which are included in a Vista SP1 build 6001 release. Therefore: If you have a SP1 disc, you should be fine.

However the better way is to use the intel drivers. I included a link to ones that you just need to unzip. Don't put them on CD, but on USB-Stick.

Why are intel drivers better than MSAHCI? Well it depends. But expect the vendor of your hardware to provide compatible drivers. The MSAHCI.SYS Microsoft driver has to provide walkarounds for many different controllers and harddrives with flaws.

Oh, I hadn't realized that there was a problem. I guess it must be more of a problem with x64 then, cos my M1530 is running fine with the MS drivers, and the PC I built with x64 was an AMD rig, which explains why it's fine.

u need the ACHI driver for x64

i tried extracting the driver and loading it at the hard-drive partitions screen in vista x64 installation, but sometihng about needing signed drivers ...

this is the m1330 x64 drivers, but just to give u an idea

    i did this way:
except, that i installed Vista as ATA, boot first time(when Vista 'sets up ur desktop' = first time), then change registry, then reboot(at boot screen change back to ACHI), install the drivers, and reboot.... everythingworks.... has to do the registry changes first time, or else this method won't work(i tried it the hard way..)

I understand very well what you did. But it's not necessary to do it that complicated.

I don't know where you got your drivers from. But the intel ones I linked on the first page of this thread, are signed and work well:

ya, i got my drivers from intel's site too.... i guess vista x64 might be a little picky.... :( [and i could install those drivers after installing x64, which means signed drivers shouldn't be the problem]....well, just a little more info in case
