    Hi everyone,

I'm curious to know how many of you are running 32-bit or 64-bit Windows on your XPS M1530 notebooks, and why. How much RAM do you have?

64 bit 4GB. So I can take advantage of the full 4GB. In the past the troubles of a 64 bit weren't worth it but I think it is has come of age now where it isn't really that hard to get drivers and everything especially with the help of this forum. When Vista first came out I went with 32 bit on my desktop because it was hard enough to get 32 bit drivers back then much less 64 bit.

What are the advantages of having a 64-bit OS except for the extra RAM?

What video card drivers are you guys using (version number)? I'd love to know what the most stable set is on this laptop for x64

I am just running the latest desktop version from nVidia manually installed and no problems whatsoever yet. 64 bit give a small performance boost in general and can give a pretty good performance boost with some 64 bit applications. There are some other benefits too i think.

running 64 bit ultimate, 6 gb of ram, intel drivers for chipset and Turbo Cache module and intel 4965 n, laptop2go nvidia driver with modded inf, upek driver for fingerprint reader (you have to purchase fingerprint software to work), Creative driver for webcam. If you check, alot of the drivers on dell support are for 32 and 64 bit, but not all. My system is stable and everything works. I installed all this on new WD 320 gb, 7200 rpm hard drive, so if i had problems, i could just reinstall oem hard drive with all the oem software. I cant see going back to x32. I followed Rhodans lead and purchased 4 gb stick, along with 2 gb stick for 6 gb.
Dell is considering updating their bios to support 8 gb on the 1530 and 1330, for us who want to have max ram supported by chipset.

Currently have 4GB of RAM and I have ordered a single 4GB SODIMM stick to bring the lappy up to 6GB (See sig link for more info).

    • Full processing power from multicore processors
    • More inherent security features, especially involving encryption
    • Future-proof (at least for a while anyway)

I have 4gb ram and am running Vista 64 bit. There are numerous threads on this issue; try searching 1550 and 64 bit and 1330 and 64 bit. In particular there is a large thread on how to install 64 bit on a 1330 which also will apply to a 1530 (same drivers). FYI, there is no need to pay for the fingerprint software. Again, a couple of threads on it, search upek and 64 bit.

From what I have learned from these threads on this forum, 64 bit is more secure, enables more ram and is faster. I don't see any downside to at least trying to install and work with 64 bit except a little of your time; you can always go back to 32 bit if needed.
