I have an XPS 1730 with 2 gigs of RAM currently, but I still have the Inspiron e1705 which houses 2 gigs (two one-gig sticks) of Kingston DDr2 667 MHZ (PC2 5300) memory. Does the XPS have room for me to add the other two sticks of RAM, to make it a total of 4 gigs? Or does it have 512 MB sticks distributed amongst four connectors or something like that? (I've taken the RAM out of an Inspiron before but I have yet to do it to the XPS - anyone have a link to a guide for this or yotube vid?)

The system has XP Pro [32 bit]. I realize if there were room it would only recognize 3.5 ghz, or something like that - correct?

    Here is the service manual

There are only two slots so you would need 2 GB sticks if you wanted to go to 4 GB.

Thanks for the responses, and I read through the RAM deals thread. I have some follow-up questions, however...

Am I looking for 200-pin sticks still? And what exactly is "HyperX" memory, and is it worth it? I have XP-pro (32-bit), so would I be better off using one 1-gig and one 2-gig stick [=3 gigs] or should I just go with the two 2-gig sticks and let the computer recognize the 3 gigs?

Here is what I'm looking at:

    Kingston 2 x 2 GB sticks

    Kingston 'HyperX' 2 x 2 GB sticks

    Kingston 2 GB stick

Yup, they have to be 200 pin DDR2 notebook RAM.
I`d just wait and check the RAM deal thread again until a special offer shows up, I got my 4 GB OCZ 667 for 30$ after rebate.

I did some reading and read somewhere that dual channel memory doesn't work well if one stick is different amount of memory than the other. So it sounds like I'm better off going 2 x 2 GB sticks for 4 gigs (3.5 net) than my original 1 x 1 GB + 1 x 2 GB stick for 3 gigs.

What does everyone else think? The reason I ask is because I have a third 1 x 1 GB Kingston stick lying around, and if I did the 3 gig setup I'd only need to shell out 40 some odd bucks for the 2 GB stick, rather than the 2 x 2 GB sticks.

Well you will need to think about it, Are you gonna use Vista 64 bit or 32 bit?? if you are using 32 bit i would suggest you to stick with the 3GB, windows wont recognize more than that, if you are going to use 64 Bit, go for the 4GB. up to you.
