I was just wondering what happens If I were to click the dell media direct button when the machine was off? I completely reformatted my HDD and installed XP pro within a new partition after deleting the old ones. I did not re-install the media direct program, however the play/pause/volume controls all work.

As long as you deleted that partition, you should not have a problem when you press that MD buttom. In my case when I installed XP Pro I didn't delete the partition (stupid me), when I pressed it, it took me to the blue screen and cost me a full reinstall again.
