I have used my 1340 for about 3 months now and not until recently had I experience a constant hard drive noise.
I don't know how to describe the noise...something like blowing air into water, but in a more subtle sound
It would go away every once in a while...possibly when the laptop is not running as hard...but then after a while it will come back again
It is very annoying especially when I use the laptop at a quiet place...however I don't see any performance issue so far
is that a sign that my hard drive is failing?

My hard drive's model number is ST932042 1ASG (from device manager)
I looked at Dell's download page and they only have firmware update for ST932042 3ASG
I'm not sure if I should update with that firmware...can anyone point me out where I can find the appropriate firmware?

You can try it, the update will test it first if it is updatable.

I tried both updates available on dell and they werent written for my hard drive
I was able to extract more info about my hard drive though
    Model: ST9320421ASG
    SN: 5TJ0HRX5

Is DE17 the latest firmware for my hard drive already?

Is that in Device Manager ? I guess its BIOS is corrupted or something. Have you flashed it before ? Try contacting Dell and have it replaced

Yes it is in device manager and no I have never flashed anything to it before
Strangely in device manager its named "ST932042 1ASG SCSI Disk Device"
Don't know why it says SCSI...maybe it means something?

I ran the Dell diagnostic program and now I confirmed that the noise actually comes from the processor fan lol
Anyone know of a way to control the fan speed?
