So at first I was confused but now I understand. First official, completely top to bottom support for all mobility cards (in the specified range of course) will come out with 10.3. What they didn't say that SOME mobility cards will be already supported with 10.2 and our " Dell (Studio XPS 16 Mobility Radeon HD 4670)" is on that list.

This was posted in another thread, but this wasn't the focus. They also have beta 10.3s...but I thought it was neat that official 10.2 WHQL certified drivers supported our card

update: Sorry, just to be clear. Official 10.2s support the 4670 in our laptops (1640/5/7)

How do they work for you tenknics (performance-wise)? I've been hearing good things. (thx for making it easier to download too :)) did you try the betas?

EDIT:Wait a minute...I think I actually just understood your post. So no need to mobility mod the 10.2s? I never tried these because I thought they needed modding (which was outdated). Imma have to try these then.

Well in the thread that I credited, Iaata was helping explain the steps to mobility mod 10.2s. But then it was discoverd that it only worked on WinXP for some reason and the 10.2s couldn't be Mobility Modded for Vista or Win7. Then someone else within the thread found the beta 10.3s and I just kept going further and found the official 10.2s which just happen to support our videocard and laptop :)

Easy install, I set a restore point just in case. Also I usually uninstall before I install new graphic drivers but I know its not necessary. So I was lazy this time and it just installed them over the old ones I had, I think the most recent hot-fixed ones from a few weeks or month ago? Anyway, super-clean and smooth. About to game, here is a gem I found for ya 3D guys..

Stumbled upon the new 3D support tab, undeer "workstation". They seem to be settings for the active display glasses that are used...

i tried official 10.2 from ati's site but it does NOT support mobility cards yet. so if you managed to install 10.2 on your mobility card, then it's probably not the official version but some modded one. try the one from ati's official page, you won't be able to install that.
starting with 10.3 they will all support it, so does the 10.3 beta which is already out.

imho the official doesn't work. so if u want to install a new driver i'd either install 10.3 beta (link) or the modified 10.2 linked in this thread..

Hi, When I installed the 10.3 pre beta drivers it says my catalyst version is 9.7??? why is that? I even cleaned all drivers with driver sweeper and pre installation folders and then installed the package.

Second question(not relevant to first): Also how do you install 10.2 ones? there is no setup file how do you update it?

The driver from http://strags.com/ is official and not modded. ATI has been creating builds with Mobility support all along and just not releasing them, that's what I provide at strags.com. "WHQL certification" means the driver is in it's original form when it was certified by Microsoft. If a file is edited then the digital signature becomes invalid and you will have to force installation when it prompts you about it, unless you've configured your system otherwise. The CATALYST 10.2 driver on my site is WHQL certified whereas CATALYST 10.3 Preview is not.

There's also a good reason why there's no installation instructions provided with the drivers; you gotta know what you're doing if you're going to mess around with them. The proper way to install them is to use the Device Manager and to select "Update Driver" and do a manual installation over your current one. If that fails, use device manager to uninstall your current driver, selecting the option "Delete the driver software for this device" and then run "Update driver".

ATI might not intend for the Mobility compatibility to be left in, or perhaps, as they've said, they're not allowed to release Mobility updates (until recently). :)

driver packaging version 8.71 shows you have installed it successfully.
non-official (beta) releases like this often have no catalyst version number at all, but it doesn't really matter anyway.

No offense guys, buy you're all wrong. Like Gaah said you have to know what you're doing and pay attention. Did you all actually read my post? Or Read your own? The problem with all your scenarios is that you downloaded them from ATi's website. These drivers are official just like Gaah explained. I even linked them for you in the OP yet you all decide to go to the official ATI website and download them (which is a different build) and then tell me they dont work...!?!?!

Use the link provided. Official 10.2s work on our cards, if you say otherwise you don't know what you're doing.

Its been like this 10.1 or so. Look at your Driver Package #, not the Cataylst version. It should be 8.71.3-1 for 10.3. For some reason they have left out the line of code that identifies what Catalyst version it is, and it defaults to 9.7 Mine says the same thing. If you don't believe me then check out all the new features you have and you will realize its not 9.7..

I encourage you all to read and do your research before you denounce something as not working. Thanks Gaah.

This driver does work but I was unable to install it via Update driver so I uninstalled the complete ATI package. Installed this driver via Update driver function in Device manager. CCC was not included so I ran the setup of my old ATI Driver and did a custom installation. I selected all to install except ATI Display Driver. So now I have the Latest Driver and even CCC works fine and shows the Driver number in its info window. Thanx

Lesson learned: never use the "update driver" function in device manager for major drivers such ad 3D/display.

That doesn't really answer my question. Where's the driver from? Is it a repacked OEM release?

Silly us for going to amd.com looking for the drivers. I'm not sure that you and I have the same definition of the word "official". What you linked to is as much officially sanctioned by AMD/ATI as any other random driver floating around the net.

I'm also not sure how they can be the same and yet at the same time be a different build.

Oh, the old "you don't know what you're doing" tactic. Now I'm officially convinced.

There's still something funny going on though as the screenshot on this page:

    http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=315901

Shows Catalyst v10.2 and CCC v2010.0210.1730.31317. Mine says CCC is v2010.0205.1306.23449. I can't find this newer version anywhere, even the desktop v10.2 driver package, and I'm sure that's contributing to the false v9.7 results.

The driver comes from Microsoft, that's about as much detail as I'm going to give out. The driver has identical build number to that of the one found on ati.com. Who cares what is official and not official, it's newer and a WHQL certified build, and ATI's never going to release it nor any previous release I've come out with. Good luck finding an OEM releasing anything even close to as new as I have...

I was pointing out a fact, don't get mad at me. In the original post I clearly linked where the drivers were at. If you did know what you were doing, you wouldn't have gone to the ATI site and WOULD have been able to install it without any problems.

Look buddy, argue with me all you want. Gaah and I have already made it pretty crystal clear, its officially WHQL certified. I can't help that, that means nothing to you. You can fight it all you want, meanwhile the rest of us will enjoy Official 10.2, unmodded drivers on our 1640s :)

Hey thanks for catching that, sorry for the mistake. Glad you kept digging and found it ;)

P.S. Gaah is that site yours, or do you contribute? Hobby or just for fun? if you can't answer its cool, just simply curious. thanks again for the drivers.

Iaata, it started with the 9.12 hot-fix that came out in mid December. The hotfix install info had no HKR or Catalyst_Version information strings, so it just showed up as whatever previous version you had. At the time everyone's was showing 9.11 when it supposed to be 9.12. This problem has been around ever since, at least for me. My version before the 9.12 hot-fix was 9.7 and that is why whenever I update CCC, it always says 9.7.

I suspect the same thing is happening in these new releases.

    Hi,

So before I wipe and do a fresh install of Win 7, I wanted to give the 10.2 drivers a try from strags.com.

At first I couldn't get them install, I saw Vista-7-AMD64 and assumed with was for AMD Processors only, I was trying to use the Vista-7-x86 folder.. :( LOL..

Installed fine (Update Driver).. Had an issue with CCC not functional, I simply used the Restart Runtime option from the CCC Start Menu Folder... CCC now functional but still of originally installed CCC version (of course):

    NEW

    Catalyst™ Control Center Version 2009.0813.2131.36817

    OLD

Is there a new CCC version that is recommended for the 10.2 drivers on his website?

    Thanks in advance

strags.com has a link to a recent Dell ATI driver that includes a newer HDMI, and CCC build. Install that frist then CAT 10.2 display driver over it.

Do you know if R257949.exe (the current Dell ATI Driver) can be found under another Dell Model (I have 1647) in Drivers and Downloads?

I want to try downloading it with Dell's Download Manager.. I keep getting disconnected at around 21MB.. I'm not having issues downloading large files from other sites.

Not as easy as 123 but finally got it... I couldn't get it by installing the current Dell first, then the 10.2 driver!

    What I did:
    • Uninstall current Driver [Device Manager]
    • Scan for Hardware Changes [Device Manager] - standard Windows ATI Driver installed (4/2009 date I think)
    • Install 10.2 WHQL certified from strags.com (via Update Driver)
    • Install Dell ATI 8.692.1.0000 from Dell, linked on strags.com (used Custom, unchecked Driver Install, everything else Installed/checked).

    Now:
    Driver Packaging Version 8.702-100202a-095757C-ATI
    Provider ATI Technologies Inc.
    2D Driver Version 8.01.01.1004

    Direct3D Version 8.14.10.0728
    OpenGL Version 6.14.10.9551
    Catalyst™ Control Center Version 2010.0122.858.16002

HDMI is updated (from Install Log).

This is an update for those who have followed my testing for throttling (specifically for GPU).

Don't use the new Dell ATI Drivers linked (to Dell) on strags.com (8.692.1.0000). - Perhaps this is an attempt by Dell to help with some thermal issues......

    I did a Win 7 clean install.

Those drivers are locking the core/mem clock (never changes even for idle, or 100%)

Dell new drivers (8.692.1.0000) on strags.com

    Always locked on:
    450.0Mhz (core)
    598.5Mhz (mem)

    :(

    GPU-Z 0.3.9

ATI HDMI Audio Ver: 5.0.7000.9 dated: 9/18/2009

    furmark score: 652 (MSAA: 0x) :(

After Uninstall (except HDMI) using 10.3 Preview Uninstall
Must have been drivers downloaded and install during Win 7 Clean Install (had a July 2009 date)
    furmark score: 932 (MSAA: 0x)

Core/Mem Clock: Normal (from Idle to 100% Load)

After 10.3 Preview Install (I first used the 10.3 Preview Uninstaller - showed nothing installed, rebooted, then used Driver Sweeper to remove all ATI driver related. Upon Reboot, Win 7 used 800x600 rez).

ATI HDMI Audio Ver: 7.11.0.7703 dated: 1/21/2010

    furmark score: 920 (MSAA: 0x)

10.3 Preview Driver does have an updated HDMI driver.

Hey Turbe, do you mind running Furmark at 1600x900 (custom size) with Post FX enabled and see what score you get?

I got a 1159 with the 10.3 preview drivers. (On the 90w, my 130w comes in the morning! YUSS!!!)

    Furmark (1.8.0): 1600x900, MSAA=0 and FX=On score from 3 runs: 1359, 1363, 1363

Same score with 50% or 100% brightness.

Anyway the reason for the post is that there is someone scoring 8200s with 1645 in 3DMark06 which is 1000 more than I get (my CPU score is the same). The difference in score comes from SM2.0 and SM3.0 which is GPU related.

Anyone else getting 8200s with 3DMark06 (basic edition)?

He could be OCing. If you do find out what the discrepancy is, please let us know.

Thanks for the furmark btw; although, the 200 pts diff makes me sad. Haha.

Thanks Turbe, just wanted to make sure my machine was close to what it is supposed to be getting.

    Update: Ran today with the 130w and got 1170, 1170, and 1169. (1600x900 FX=on)
