Seems unlikely that Dell would find a GPU with 3GB to put in the laptop... unless its SLI or Crossfire, which also seems unlikely since they have Alienware.

I think that Dell can choose to put the performance of the Alienware M15x in the Studio XPS for those who do not like the Alienware design (many people do not like the design).

    This is only a theory

I have a huge doubt this is coming to reality unless they want their XPS line to eat up their business/AW line.

If your current laptop had 128GB of RAM, you would probably see no benefit.

And for the GPU, there are plenty of (now) budget desktop cards with only 256MB that score 4x more points on synthetic benchmarks than the 5730.

    To sum up:

This is the maximum configuration for Studio XPS 17 :
    Processor: Intel Core I7 obvious/expected
RAM: 16 GB 4 slots is not uncommon, see the XPS 16's competitors
    HDD: 1.2 TB 600GB + 600GB, nothing new
Graphics: 3GB of memory dedicated seems interesting, but tells nothing about performance
JBL Speakers "good" speakers are a must
HDMI 1.4 it better have HDMI
USB 3.0 took 'em long enough
Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, ... more standard suff

This leaves big questions- what type of screen? Will the XPS 15 throttle/overheat?

Wonder if a Dec/Jan release would mean Sandy Bridge CPU's and ATI 6xxx GPU's. If not I would say that buying this would be terrible timing given the impending tech.

3GB of dedicated graphics? Come on! There's no way Dell would throw something like this out when it already owns Alienware!

Hmmm ... I dont know what to make of this news/rumour having just purchased a Dell XPS 1645 myself.

Thankfully with the 3 yr warranty as Gloomy has mentioned, I am alright.

But I tend to shy away from the latest releases of anything until the technology has settled or proven itself ... and people have commented.

So nothing to jump up and down about just yet.

Thanks for the info fr0x. I've been waiting since last year for a new laptop and I'm hoping for a reasonably good GPU and processor as well as a HD screen!

I'm somewhat surprised that the info is out in Europe before North America or Asia seeing that I always thought that the latter markets were usually first when it came to refreshes.

Same but LesDelliens have great knowledge in France that allows Dell also have 20-25% discount on all models and all year for the members of LesDelliens. You can look on the forum LesDelliens that manager of Dell confirm that.

One thing I can confirm is that this news and picture come from a manager of Dell France and I do not think that Dell sent false informations and picture.

That's the information and now just have to wait to see if this is confirmed :)

There very well might be some new systems coming out from Dell but those specifications are bunk. 2/3GB graphics solution? It might be possible but I highly doubt it, the forum post actually says something about nVidia being the provider of these GPUs, and if that's true then even nVidia's just announced mobile Fermi offerings are being touted as having only 1GB RAM (including the most advanced chip, the GTX 470M).

What do you mean from the American vieuwpoint? The french helped americans win their war for independence from brittain, and gave you the statue of liberty.

Anyway I really hope there will really be new xps laptops, with hopefully a 13 inch model in the future.

Well I would think that Dell could be coming out with these two new models but the picture looks like they went backwards as far as style. I much rather the looks of my SXPS 16 than the "picture" of one of the new models. Also think... If they put this much performance into a Studio XPS 17, what will they fit into the Alienware 17x? Only time will tell

The 2 and 3Gb for the GPUs is probably also an error. There is no way they can build a 15" with a 480GTX or 2x435GT...both would mean 80-100W TDP in a 2.5kg chassis...

I suppose it will be 1x445GT or 1x435GT for the 15" version and 1x480GTX or 2x460GT for the 17".

They are not going to put high end gpu's into the studio xps line as that would be in direct competition to alienware. There will most likely not be sli anything and more likely midrange gpu solutions in the quote it says that it is geared towards customers not looking for performance and the SXPS line now is just a multimedia machine that is somewhat gaming capable not a Gaming machine. I understand that this is a rumor thread, but keep it realistic and there won't be a lot of disappointment. I doubt you will see a 460 470 or 480 in these systems.

Aren't those high performance gaming GPU's though?

    I'm baffled.
Why would they release a machine that competes with an Alienware that looks like a mini10?
If this is in fact true, I think it's a mistake, and that a 14inch would have fit in perfectly with a revamped S-XPS 16.

GTX470 or 480M probably not but for the 460m are several indications that it is likely to have in the SXPS 17. But this is just rumors and we can not get information from Dell because they want to keep the surprise until the official announcement :(

If I am correct the m15x is slated to get the 460 so I doubt that the xps 17 will have the same card the m17x will most likely get the 470's in sly or the 480's. The 460 is still a pretty high performance gpu.

Yes the GTX 460M is a pretty high performance gpu and with a TDP (with MXM) of 70w.

After it may be possible that Dell has designed the chassis for the 460M and consider a refresh of the range Alienware (for Sandy Bridge?) with 470 GTX
480M and for differentiation from Studio XPS.

After this is just rumors and we might consider all possible cases for the model of graphic card ^ ^

The only thing I can tell you that Dell France has confirmed that there aren't error with the specifications MAX for Studio XPS 15 and 17

I am without a working system since 3 months becoz of Dell :(

Got the first replacement - Faulty Blu-Ray, Alignment Issues, Still Throttles.

Getting the second replacement - Wait is on with upgraded OS but Ultimate doesnt really make sense as an upgrade from Pro...

Now new XPS refresh, Damn if my new XPS throttles, I am getting one !! ;)

I am pretty sure the GPU wouldnt be above 1GB for XPS 15. Will miss the USB 3.0 and HDMI 1.4!!

I just wish that Dell would stop with the high gloss fingerprint magnet finishes.

Yes ... I think Dell will not come with current i-series processors. May be they will launch this new laptops after Sandy bridge launch on 9th Jan 2011 and its justified.

And hope they will bring down the heat of SXPS series and will reduce the glossiness of laptop.
