im thinking about getting this system, i plan on buying all the parts seperately. one thing i was wondering is do i have to buy an athlon mobile chip? im having a hard time finding a website that sells the mobile version. i imagine the mobile chips are a bit more expensive too. i never intend to use this notebook on battery alone, ill always have it plugged in, so im not worrying about losing battery time on a non-mobile processor. would the non-m processor cause more heat?

    Noxxle,

The mobile a64's aren't any more expensive, but they are hard to come by. We started using only the mobile a64's in the Z8's when it became evident that they were slightly better on battery life and produced less heat (obviously because it's a lower wattage).. but it has almost the same performance, and now the prices are basically the same.

My suggestion would be to go with the mobile version..... but if all you can get your hands on is the desktop version... or say you were pulling the chip out of a desktop you were upgrading... by all means it's not going to burn the system up.... if you can get a good deal on the desktop version, go for it.

    Thanks,
    Justin

i searched around abit, and newegg has a 3000 at 81.5w. is it true the z80k wont take over 62w? thats what it says at asus's website, but i have heard otherwise. secondly would the heat difference be notable between the two (62 v 81)? lastly, how hot does this system get compared to others? its either this or a i6000 for me. cept the i6000 i would be getting would have a pentium M 730 chip at 1.6ghz, seems to me that would be a lot slower than a athlong xp 3000

The Z8 can handle the 81w'er but the 62w'er is the mobile version. Both will work, although since the mobile processor came out, Asus doesn't want to suggest the desktop processor, although before the mobile version was released, all we had to use was the desktop version......... so it does work.

Yes...... more heat..... worse battery life... a couple ounces heavier....

That P-M would be similiar to around what... a 2.7 P4.. the 3000+ is similiar to a 3.0ghz P4... so there's your answer. Although, if you have a need or want for 64 bit... then there is no compromise. But if you're looking at both ends of the table, centrino certainly has it's benefits, but so does an a64 system..........

Asus' site is full of errors in the specs of the barebones. The desktop replacement cpu works too however there is a slight difference between the DTR and the desktop athlon 64. There is no integrated heatspreader and also the DTR comes with 1mb l2 cashe and the desktop version has only 512mb. You might have a problem with the heatspreader since the cooler on z80k was designed to work without one. The heatspreaader is thin ~1/32" or more but unless you have at least some pressure applied by the heatsink on the die of the chip you will get horrible performance and you can fry the CPU very easily. So I would have to diagree that if you have a desktop version of Athlon 64 with the correct socket that you should use it in z80k. Not sure about this but you might not even be able to close the back of the case. Also the reson why the mobile CPUs have the heatspreader missing is because this increases the cooling performance. The mobile CPU is just as fast as the desktop versions and with the prices being about $10-20 more there is no reason why should get the desktop one. The less heat means less noise and also the longer battery life is well worth the money increase. Also from experience newegg does not have the best price for things like that at all. (well at least they didn't when I bought mine). If I am not mistaken Gameve.com should have a good deal on mobile amd64 and they are a decent company.

BTW the Z80K has native support for DDR400. I keep seing people write that it doesnt support 2gb ram and it dont take pc3200. It does and it always did. Just wanted to bring that up.
