i had a quick question about the z63a that i hope you people who own one could answer.

it's about the audio out on it.

the asus website says there is S/PDIF out. is this in the optical (toslink) form or the coaxial (RCA type) form?

also on asus' website, it says there are two audio outs. so, i was wondering if there really are PHYSICALLY two separate ports, or if the digital and analog audio are on the same port?

(if you think i'm crazy for thinking the digital and analog can be in the same port, take a look at most minidisc recorders. i own a Sony MZ-R900 and the line-in and optical in (1/8" form, not the full toslink size) are physically the same port)

also, if it does have S/PDIF output, is the S/PDIF capable of Dolby Digital 5.1 output from DVDs? or does it only support stereo?

The digital out is a mini-jack, not RCA or S/PDIF, and is the headphone jack. It is supposed to be capable of DD5.1, though you may have to change some of the settings in the Control Panel's Sound icon to enable DD 5.1 pass-through so your reciever can decode it.

I'm at work now, but I can double check tonight or over the weekend if no one else can confirm this.

Just to clarify on that last post.... It DOES have S/PDIF, in the form of a mini-toslink (optical) jack, which doubles as the headphone jack. It's capable of 5.1

That's correct....... a majority of Asus' systems since the M6 have S/PDIF outputs in the form of a mini-TOS........... unless you have an optical input on your stereo, it's not really going to do you any good...... but it's a perfect 7.1 pass-thru..

It is tos-link. Easy way to tell is to look inside and find the red lens. One is in there
