I guess something along the lines of the A6u, but with dedicated graphics card. I recalled Justin saying that Asus likes to keep its AMD and Intel lines seperate..so perhaps there is a chance we can find a Turion equivelent to some of those nice gaming/semi gaming Intel Asus models.

A6k was supposed to come out but Asus US doesn't want to import it because it only has a 64mb Nvidia 6200..... They are waiting to bring in something more substantial... something to compete with the Z71v, at least.

Well when you consider April, August and December are usually when you see new models of everything from camera's to tvs to computers.... it's a good bet. I might bet on something sooner though. Asus doesn't want to bring in the A6k becasue they are frankly embarrassed by the graphics.... Taiwan is trying to push it I think, but if the US office has their way, that's not coming in. That might get tiawan to develop a more graphics oriented model.

    Eddie,
i'd think that if you were right about your 'back to school' prediction, we would start seeing announcments by now, no?

Right...... like I said, if they didn't bring over the A6u, that A6k may have been the model they brought over, but the A6u is directed towards a cheaper price tag and the A6k isn't far enough apart performance wise... and probably price wise to warranty both options being in north america.

You will probably start to see announcements in early august if i am right, I think i am. It would make no sence to bring in the a6k. The integrated graphics are in the same league as the 6200 for all practical purposes. There is a good chance they will release the a6u with the x series of radeon. Probably the x700. It would be very interesting to know then the 6800 or the x800 comes out but it doesn't look like its even in the planning. Prolly another year till we see those.

That was a guess....... Asus' AMD offerings have never followed that general premise though..... We see those come out often a different times of the year...... october, february, june..... The A6u broke that a bit and came out in the middle of may..... but.. close enough....... so right now we can't bet on whats' going to happen with it, but surely nothing is happening within the next month as Asus has said there isn't anything they'd like to order even avaialbile yet...... and from the start of the order process to when it can get build by us is usually about a month... so we're looking into July at the very earliest anyway.

that's really sad considering there isn't a notebook on the market with a turion that you can configure to any kind of awesomeness (7200rpm hdd, WSXGA/WUXGA, good graphics, dvd writer) except the Acer Ferarri and that's pretty overpriced. I can't see why everyone is dragging their heals on this. Grrrr... If only PentiumM's could run Longhorn 64-bit...

I guess my answer should have been... yes... as soon as possible.

They would have brought in the A6k, but it has a 64mb nvidia 6200... honestly not much better than the integrated graphics the A6u has. The US office would love to get a 128mb 6600 like the Z71v has..... and use a high res widescreen. IT would be an expensive system... more than the Z71 when configured a like because of the price of the new turion cpus..... but it would be a powerhouse...

That's what they want, but it doesn't look like Taiwan is going to let them order something like that anytime soon... I would say August looks like the earliest we're probably going to see something substantial..... But news changes everyday... so, we'll see... but keep in mind, from order date to availability to order from say, us.. is about a month... Add that to a normal build time, plus the weekend and shipping time... So even if we got word tomorrow that they can order this very system, we'd be looking at probably the 3rd week of July before that could be in your hands......

... and I don't think we're going to hear anything on Monday that this magic machine is all of a sudden going to be available.... but at the same time Turion is something Asus is helping promote and it's going to be a bigger deal than the Athlon 64 systems were with them.

    Thanks,
    Justin

ooooh.... um...... I'd bet earlier actually... and that x700 was a good call. Right now Asus has come out and said they would have liked the A6k to have 128mb 6600 .. instead of the 64mb 6200... so they don't want to bring it in........ but when it comes down to it, it could end up being an ATI model.

Asus was in bed with Nvidia for ever.... it was only the start of 2004 that they started working with ATI for desktop graphics cards and at the same time worked those chips into the notebooks.

The ATI's run cooler, at least from their tests.... The AMDs are still prefered by true CAD professionals and Nvidia is better for OpenGL CAD programs... so it's a tough call..... it really is. I can see Asus going ...... AMD/Nvidia - Intel/ATI ..... with obviously some overlap like the Z71v....

    Thanks,
    Justin

The 6200 Turbo Cache in the A6K is noticably better than any inegrated graphics at moderate resolutions. About the same as a Dell Inspiron 6000 ATI MRX300 in 3DMark03 and slightly better than a Asus V6V X600 in 3DMark05 and OpenGL. Go any higher than native res, though, and the 64bit graphics memory along with the lack of system memory bandwith (which makes TurboCache rather useless on a Turion) makes the framerates tank.

    Some test results with a AMD Turion64 MT-30, 1,6 GHz, 512MB PC2700.

    3DMark03: 2594
    3dMark05: 1063
    Doom 3, High Quality, 1024x768: 20,6 FPS
Far Cry, High Quality, 1024x768: 32,9 FPS

Another thing about the tested sample (directly from Asus) was that it didn't apperar to support the improved P-States and deeper sleep that's supposed to differentiate the Turion (along with SSE3) from the Low Voltage Mobile A64. As a result it was somewhat noisy and had poor (2h30m, MobileMark 2002) battery life. Hpoefully shipping units will have an upgraded BIOS to fix this, or they might as well use a much cheaper Mobile Sempron.

As I've evaluated my own needs I have come to grips with the fact that portability and battery life are more important to me than raw performance. So even though I like the idea of playing some high performance games that require a reasonably high end dedicated GPU, I can live with a lower performance graphics scenario. What i can't live without is something that weighs less than 5.5 lbs. and has a 14.1 WXGA screen. Does ASUS plan on a Turion version of something like the W3V or Z63? with perhaps a Go6200 TC or ATI XPRESS 200M or X300? That would be right up my alley.

are you sure you want a Turion version? P-M generally has better battery life. the Asus W3V or the Compal EFL30 (also sold as Chembook2030) sound perfect for you.

I apologize for not clarifying....I was thinking in terms of the MT-34 or processor with the 25W dissipation which should be about apples to apples in power draw vs. the pentium M.

    Thanks
