I am pretty set on purchasing the w2j once the wsxga+ screen comes in (hopefully soon)!! I had a few concerns about upgrading certain components in it.

    1. Is it possible to upgrade the video card to a x1800 instead of the x1600.

    2. Since the w2j already comes with the Built-In Intel PRO/Wireless 3945 A/B/G miniPCI, and i do not see an open slot for another wireless card, how would it do when the 802.11n comes around, would it be upgradable?

    3. Any speculations on how the new conroe/merom core 2 duo is gonna be compatible with this system. Drop in? Lowered performance? Also is it gonna be worth the extra 600 bucks? Performance wise how much is it gonna increase?

    4. Anyone want to speculate on how long asus is gonna take to release another version of the w2j to use the new santa rosa platform? Is it worth the wait?

Sorry about so many question, please do ur best to answer them to ur best knowledge. Thank You

    rubiks24 welcome to the forum.

Unfortunately your first post shows that you have not read the Sticky that says: The ASUS Notebook FAQ [Newbies Read First please!]

Item number 3) On the flipside new users please have a read thru the FAQ's first....and or try a search for the info you want this will often be the quickest way to find info and will help keep the forum more manageable thru less repeat posts.

We would all appreciate it if you would do a search to see if your questions have already been answered (your questions have been discussed in many threads already). :)

    1. You can not upgrade video cards in laptops. At the moment there are less than a handful that are capable of that, and video cards would be very hard to find.

2.To early to tell. In the future they will prob release a abgn card that would fit in that slot that would be upgradable. If not there will be a express slot version which would fit into that pc.

3.merom will be compatable with the 945 chipset. It will prob require a bios update which you will prob see in the future.

    4. I would say not till first quarter 2007. asus is very slow to release new models. and they will use the memorom in the 945 chipset before the next. but it really depends when santa rose is ready. but its going to be a while. As for should you wait its going to wait buy one when you need it.

Is there a free/unoccupied pci express slot in the w2j?

The plain and simple answer is no, and no you can't upgrade the GPU, when you buy a notebook, the GPU is the only thing you really can't upgrade.

In the future it makes sense that GPU's will be user upgradeable, but right now they are not.

There are a few exceptions but those are manufacturer exceptions.

If you got any other questions plz ask :D

    Thanks,

The wsxga+ screen is really really overpriced. Our W2JC price in germany is 2249euros. I believe the W2Jb cost less.

yeah **** thats another $1000. Um I hope the price will be less than 2500 or at least somewhere around there, if it isnt then I am really gonna hate myself for not taking up on the $200 mail-in rebate with the current wxga screen. crosses fingers

I dont suppose the w2j's slot loading drive is swapable? I dont just mean simple hot swap and pull out with a release button, but as in freeing up a few screws here and there. Would it be easily doable if i dont like the panasonic brand or toshiba and want to try another. Btw what other brand/model drives fit and will work?

you cannot swap out the dvd drives, and I wouldn't want to because it matches the notebook and plus its slot loading.
