Hey all, which of the ASUS 14 to 15" notebooks is the best bang for the buck, priority is the graphics card, cause if thats decent, the other stats are usually pretty sweet too, but if you know of a really good one with a mid range Graphics Card, thats cool too.

You know, there are many post that fit this thread description, you can use the search function.

Other than graphic card, anything else that you would also deem important? Would you like to build one yourself or prebuilt?

i must admit to a spat of laziness, but i wanted to create discussion and just glean info from it. In the end I want the most future proof laptop I can build, which i already know is a contradiction in terms, but humor me if you will.

Need DVI? Webcam? More USB ports? and the list can go on, depending on the model and availability.

indeed it can, but in my haste to post a thread to start this discussion, i failed to stop by the newcomers to Asus FAQ which looks to break down exactly what i need to read, sorry for the annoyance, forgive the newbie.

No problem, I think the V1J maybe the best bet for you - I can't remember if its coming to N.A.

Filling out the FAQ from the Which Notebook Should I Buy Forum would help out immensely in trying to find out which one is good for you.

As mythless has said, there's too many that can fit your criteria of high end graphics card :)

in my wanderings through the online ASUS retailers the best i have seen for the midsize notebooks was the 7600 GS, i was wondering if that was the best one for that size notebook. (I'm thinkin yeah)

In a 14" form factor, yes I believe a Go7600 or x1600 would be the most powerful card that can be fit.

    Not sure about 15.4" though....

If you're looking at 14" then check out the A8Jm (Go7600) and W3J (x1600), or wait a bit and see if the A8Jp/A8Js with Go7700/x1700 gets released in North America.

    For 15.4", S/Z96J (x1600), F3Jm (Go7600) are also worth a look, or wait for the V1J ($$$$ :) )

I would go for the 15.4 inch i think, the waiting is killing me though. I know i should anyways for Santa Rosa, but I walk into my room everyday and see my dimension 3000 celeron, CRT monitor, no dvd burner, p.o.s., and i sigh, its a deep sigh too. :(

So, the Asus will be a desktop replacement? Why not just buy a new desktop if the graphic card the most important?

very impressed with the A8JM, this along with the W3J is (at the time of writing) the most powerful 14" in the market out there. but like the others have mentioned others with better graphics cards are starting to show up

I want a notebook, I want the portability and space saving that comes with a notebook. And if I'm going to purchase a notebook, I want the best compromise in processing power, reliability, and cost. I have heard good things about Asus. The only Dell I would buy would be the Latitudes, but I have concerns over their future quality given the companys current state-of-affairs. HP's are ok in quality and good in available options, but I doubt their sturdiness. The Macbooks are great, but they still have problems with their heat sinks. Plus OS X is greek to me.

Mythless you brought up something earlier that reminded me, what laptops out even come with a DVI port? I heard the HP DV9000 comes with HDMI but i don't know of others.

The V1J has a docking port with DVI. The F3Jm has DVI, but different DVI (single) compared to the A8Jm. The dell latitude line with docking station has DVI and that is all I can think of on top of my head.

lol just get the V1J, its good :) that's if or when it comes to N.A. If you still want Asus the A8Jm is pretty good.

sweet, now as soon as I pay off my classes I can buy a laptop. Of course, by then Santa Rosa will be out and start this whole battle again. But the V1J is pretty sweet, man it just looks nice too. The A8jm can't use that docking port I assume?

V1J actually has a mini dvi port, and then use a converter/adapter to make ita DVI port.

On top of that there's a docking station that is still in the works.

Some of the other features the V1J has are:
    Modular Bay
    Webcam
    Spill Proof Keyboard
    Fingerprint Reader

Another one of the V1J's features is Stealth, to a point where no one actually knows when it's released or where.

As long as it doesn't go into stealth mode after I purchase it, I don't want to go through the problem of trying to find a laptop that apparently doesn't want to be found, it just wants to be admired. :)

Sorry I cannot promise that, there have already been reports of people in Europe who bought the V1J only to lose it a day after, the finding it in bed with their wife/girlfriend, beware!
