Perfectly fine. However, if you plan to not use the battery for quite a long time, keep the charge level on the battery below 50% to prevent any damage to it.

Yes, you can do it. There are pros and cons:

    Pros:
    - Able to store battery correctly to maximise life.
    - No aging (and hence loss of life) from any heating the laptop does of the battery.
    - Lighter weight when moving laptop.

    Cons:
    - Battery not there to act as UPS in case of power loss (someone kicking the cable out).
    - Not being able to pick the laptop up and move somewhere else at any time
    - Having to remember to install the battery before taking the laptop somewhere.
    - Unprotected connectors in the battery compartment. In some laptops, this is open to the motherboard.

Personally, I am against removing the battery. The convenience of having it there outweighs the extra life that may come from storing it properly.

Have a read of the Battery Guide http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=91846 and make your own decision.
