i really want an asus notebook, but my budget is limited to 1400, so i have narrowed my choices to:
Asus A8JP
Intel Core 2 Duo T7200(2.00GHz)
14" Wide XGA+ (1440 x 900)
1GB DDR2 667 (2 x 512 MB)
120GB 5400rpm
DVD Super Multi
ATI Mobility Radeon X1700
1300 $ with 2 years warranty
or
Asus Z96J
Intel Core 2 Duo T7200(2.00GHz)
15.4" WSXGA (1680 x 1050)
2GB DDR2 667 Corsair
120GB 5400rpm
DVD Super Multi
ATI Mobility X1600 256MB PCI Express
1380 $ with 2 years warranty
or
Asus F3JP
Intel Core 2 Duo T7200(2.00GHz)
15.4" Wide XGA (1280 x 800)
1GB DDR2 667 (1 x 1GB) easy to upgrade
120GB 5400rpm
DVD Super Multi
ATI Mobility Radeon X1700
1280 $ with 2 years warranty
my main concerns are:
difference in performance between x1600 and x1700 and build quality
-
Go for Z96J because:
a) x1700 = x1600 except x1700 is designed for power saving but atm is harder to get latest drivers for
b) 2GB and only $100 difference
c) better res
Thats just my opinion though.
I personally have an A8JP -

I would recommend another alternative: The A8Js, if you can find it somewhere within your budget. Otherwise, My order of preference here would be Z96J > F3JP > A8Jp . Also, if you can find one of those F3JP that have a high res screen, that would be best.
-
what about problems with screens in a8j series ??
is there anything wrong with srceen in z96j ??
f3jp, the one with wsxga screen and 2GB ram, cost about 1530. is there any reason to put this 150 extra for x1700??
or maybe there is a big difference in build quality ?? -

You are comparing 15.4" notebooks and a 14" notebook, you have to compare the portability and tasks you will be doing with it. Are you going to take it to school, work? Would you mind taking a 15.4" notebook to school, as opposed to a 14" notebook?
Aside from those questions, if your going to directly compare the X1600 to X1700, you will find a slight 3-5% difference in performance, and a slight increase in battery life for the X1700, because it was made to be an upgraded X1600 with better power management.
Also you may want to compare ports and other little factors when comparing the F3JP with a WSXGA+ screen and adding another 1GB to it.
We know the Z96J is one of the best bang for the buck barebone laptops out there.
Screenwise the Z96J is really good, many good comments about it. -
at this point it's the price/performance most important factor.
i will be taking it to school frequently, but it's not a big problem, that's why i did not specify the size of screen (as long as it's within the 14-15.4" range it will be fine)
also battery life is not an issue (i can carry ac adapter)
as far as i can tell the only small difference between z96j and f3jp is the DVI port and a GPU
so i was just wondering if it's worth this 150 $ (because i'm really trying to keep it under 1400)
please help me choose ....
