is it bad for the laptop if you close it everytime you finish using it? will the hinges wear out?
-
Though the might get loose. What is your laptop BTW? -
Unless you have a lemon or don't do a good job taking care of your notebook, I would say no. I mean, if you're done using your notebook, why not close it?
-
It shouldn't really have any affect on the hinges, but on some notebooks, after a number of years and excessive opening and closing, they may become loose. Its possible to tighten the hinges, but a bit of dissasembly has to take place.

ah. well i have the asus g1, which is very nice, and i dont wanna leave the laptop open after i finish using it because i dont want dust build up in the keys. my laptop sits on my desk all them time so i never take it anywhere so leaving it open is an option. just curious if anyone has had problems with their hinges due to excesive opening and or closing.

you could buy a silicone keyboard sheet to cover your keyboard

I would imagine that hinges on a laptop are designed for extended periods of use, much like a keyboard. I would compare them to door hinges; door hinges don't wear out very easily, my house was built in 1928, and the original doors and hinges are still intact, and work very well (not that laptop hinges would last 79 years though.) My old Compaq E500 was about 8 years old, and the hinges worked very well right until the end, despite its age.

My wife still uses our old HP VX7000(I think that's what the model number is) and after about a year and a half the hinge started going out and after another month or so it was completely loose and she had to use something behind it to lean it against or it would just flop to the tabletop. We had a extended warranty and got it fixed(by BB) and about six months later it was loose again. Had to take it back up to BB and get them to tighten the freakin thing again.
I think this is fairly rare though. I have seen REALLY old laptops that didn't display the same problem that we had. -
what about turning it on and off. is it bad for the computer if you leave it on to long or if you excesivly turn it on and off?
-
Electronic components prefer to be left in the on or off state at long intervals and not excessive use of on or off.
Standby is great if you will return to the computer in a couple of hours. Anything above eight hours and you can turn it off or hibernate.
Better not to let components cool down so much so that they begin to expand and contract (depending on changes in temp). This tends to loosen connections on the mobo.
